Framingham, MA -- The bill came to $33.50 for yesterday’s lunch of baked haddock, a mai tai, and two sex on the beach drinks, but by that point the customer had vanished from the Naked Fish restaurant.

Bartender Steven Vallarelli had noticed the customer’s tacky behavior and outdated beverage choices before, but it wasn’t until the man committed the ultimate customer faux pas of not paying that Vallarelli decided to turn the tables and get his money.

"It wasn’t about the $30 bill," Vallarelli said. "It was the gall of this guy, to blatantly walk out of there."

Though the customer didn’t leave behind any money, he let slip something almost as valuable: He had told Vallarelli he was staying across the street at the Red Roof Inn. The bartender called the Framingham Police, and an officer drove the delinquent diner back to the restaurant and made him pay his tab.

Vallarelli knew the man had been coming in a lot lately, was rude, talked loudly on his cell phone, and worked for some sort of Internet mattress delivery company. The man would also do things like leave $3 extra on a $50 bill, he said.

"The point is, he’s a lousy tipper," the bartender said.

Once police found him across the street, the man had a choice: Pay the bill or face arrest. The man paid up.

Vallarelli said the man tried to blame it on him, that he had served him too much alcohol, and was too drunk to remember to pay.

The Framingham Police log lists the incident as a "civil matter," and notes, "restitution made." The man’s name is not being published because he was not arrested, and he could not be reached for comment at the motel.

Not surprisingly, the man is no longer welcome to dine at the Naked Fish. But now for the bottom line: Did he tip better this time?

"Six bucks on the check," Vallarelli said. "It’s not bad. But under the circumstances, I would have expected a larger gratuity."
