OWHNebraska’s identity in recent years has come down to this: A “multiple” scheme that can do this or that, but tries to do too much and ends up tripping over its own feet.
Sometime, in the offseason, Beck and coach Bo Pelini decided they want to play fast-tempo, mistake-free offense. To do that, a number of plays were going to have to hit the editing floor.
“Get us to play faster,” Beck explained. “I loved sometimes earlier in the year we were simpler and were a lot more effective. When we weren’t, we had penalties and turnovers.
“You look at why things happen. What’s going on?
“Had it become a thinking man’s game? Why are we throwing interceptions? Do we not know where the man is going? Are we not sure of the routes?
“We do it one time, why is it not happening later?
“You’ve got to go play and have confidence. Maybe they’re not confident because it’s too complicated.”
It’s so refreshing to hear that from an offensive coordinator. Give Beck credit for that.
