Hm. I think we have recruited a lot of receivers. Our roster is littered with scholarship guys at the position recruited since Pelini arrived .

Plus receiver being a need even towards the end of this class - we just struck out with Lockhart at the end, and still have Taariq Allen, Daniel Davie. I think that it's just with Gilmore here, WR was where promising young talent went to die.

I don't know, Zoogies. I'm not saying that Pelini has shunned the position completely, but it doesn't seem to have been a point of emphasis of late. He (Pelini) also has a penchant for recruiting WRs that can possibly play in the defensive backfield (i.e., Bell and Taariq Allen.) Assuming Allen plays DB, our receivers will look like this:

Plus that one three-star we just recruited and whose name escapes me. Is 9 scholly receivers a lot? It's basically a three-deep at the X, Y, and Z positions.

Also, you have to consider quality as well. Not to knock our receivers, but none of our "big splash" recruits have been receivers. They'll all been either defensive players or RBs and QBs. We don't seem to be going out and trying to get the four- or five-star receivers like George Farmer, etc. To me, this all suggests that WR is a relatively low priority for Pelini.

That WR depth chart doesn't include pre-Pelini guys...which at this point is just Curenski. You're right - it isn't a lot anymore. I always thought it was that we were not very good at recruiting top flight WRs, rather than not wanting them. I thought WR was a sizable need for this class, but we missed out on guys like Patrick Onsuwar, and when Lockhart fell through, that was that. If we had gotten 3 WRs - which I thought looked like a target - it would be 12 WRs on scholarship in all next year. I guess it isn't too much, and the surplus of young/unfulfilled potential guys makes it seem like we have more.

Our WR have been a bust cuz our OC, and to a lesser degree(but still importantly) our WR coach sucked a$$.

Teams like okie state and ku and even Iowa st were able to get production through the air without 5 star players.

Wow so you are going to just write off Evans, Bell, Enunwa, and Jean-Baptiste after 1 year, in which two of them Redshirted? Not sure what Osborne is going to be, but Marlowe did get some PT as a So., not to mention he looks like he will be a pretty good ST's returner when it is all said and done. Some times I wonder why everyone writes players off before their Junior years. By this logic Suh should have been cut after 2007.

We definitely have talent at WR - our problems are maximizing that talent and finding a QB to get them the ball. Taylor has a LOT of work to do before he's able to make any WR a true threat. I have no idea what Cody will do - he'll be a Junior, and I'm hoping for major improvement and pushing from him. Carnes is (allegedly) the full package, but he's never played a snap of 1A ball.

In the end it may not matter if we have Calvin Johnson and Randy Moss at wideout - our QBs need to step up, too.

yeah, it is a qb/receiver thing...takes two to make it work. Kinnie should be the big threat along with TE Reed.....other than that, so far, we don't have any guys that have broken through, although someone should emerge.

With all respect, throwing a verbal offer along with dozens of other schools at a once-in-a-lifetime WR who won't sign a LOI for another 12 months is not exactly going balls to the wall to bring in top-flight talent at the WR position. But we had 3 of the top ranked RBs and QBs in the nation this year in a single class.

Besides the fact that I'm not saying Pelini & Co. will never go after quality WRs. A legitimate star WR is a huge benefit to a run-oriented team because you still have that vertical threat that keeps the D honest. My only point is that the selection of our coaches---Beck, who seems to prefer a run-oriented spread option; Garrison, who seems to prefer a power run game; and Cotton, who seems to prefer a power run or traditional option run game---and the focus on scrambling QBs and a variety of RBs all signal a very run-oriented, hybrid spread/power system to me.

In his breakdown of NU's recruiting class, Mike Farrell predicted that Allen will end up as a safety, though it's not clear whether he believes Pelini recruited him primarily for that purpose, or if Farrell's personal opinion is that he would be better in that spot.

We all know that Pelini regards the safeties as the anchors of his D, so it wouldn't surprise me at all for him to steal Allen away from the offense if he truly believed Allen would make a game-changing safety.
