The sweeter flavour of Robert McGhie's milk stout had judges at the Koroit Agricultural Show in raptures at the weekend, winning the home brewer a championship sash.
The Allansford man said the bitter taste of stout didn't appeal to him so he decided to add lactose to his brew.
"I like the milk stout and a couple of my other beers so I put them in the show and I just thought I would find out what other people thought about them,'' Mr McGhie said yesterday.
"I had a go making beer about 20 years ago and brewed quite a bit back in those days because everyone was using sugar and it gives a weak and cidery taste to the beer.
"It wasn't very good beer and everyone compares it to bottled beer but a couple of years ago I started using glucose and it makes a better beer.
"I make about 55 bottles in a batch but unfortunately I don't have a lot left.'' Mr McGhie won first place in the Home Brew of the Year stout category and second place in the dark ale section as well as taking out the overall honours.
Koroit Agricultural Show committee president John Watson said entries were up across all divisions at the show on Saturday. The horse section was still the most popular at the event.
"The horses are getting bigger and bigger every year,'' he said.
"We could start our horses at seven in the morning if we really wanted to,'' he said.
Mr Watson said attendances at the show were about the same as last year, although a heavy shower about 1pm on Saturday had prompted many people to go home.
