Best Games by a QB - Pelini Era

In This Thread: Which games were the "best" - by whatever measure you choose - by a Husker QB in the last seven years.

Not In This Thread: We need a dedicated QB coach, we can't develop players, we need to recruit better, etc. Those topics have been and are being discussed elsewhere.

Just got to thinking about our QB play over the last several years. I'm definitely not blaming losses entirely on the QB but it seems like we've not gotten many great or even very good performances from that position in "big" games. Perhaps I'm not remembering some but it seems like good or even average QB play could have won us several more games over the years.

So here's my question: In which games do you think we got the best QB play in the following categories:

1) In a loss

2) In a game we won by one score

3) Any game

Not "that was a great play." Not "that was a great drive/comeback". Overall play for the entire game.

In a loss, I'd probably have to go with Joe Ganz against Texas Tech in 2008. 36/44 (82%) for 349 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT. Also ran for a TD. Other than that, I don't see a lot of games to consider.

In a close win, probably Martinez against Northwestern in 2012. 27-39 (69%) for 342 yards and 3 TDs. 18 carries for 65 yards and a TD. Not sure about fumbles in that game.

Any game, Martinez vs. KState in 2010. 5/7 (71%) for 128 yards and a TD. 15 carries for 241 yards and 4 TDs.

Not in any kind of order, remembered in my head for how they felt just as much.

Ganz had a phenomenal year all around - he seriously put up videogame numbers. He especially had an incredible three game tear against Texas Tech, Iowa State, and Baylor.

It's better to have a better game statistically than Zac Lee did against Arkansas State and Louisiana Lafayette.

Taylor's Oklahoma State game is still his crowning achievement, if you look at every factor. Executed the offense brilliantly for four straight quarters, threw the ball exactly where he wanted to, and ran it well also.

The Ohio State comeback wasn't quite as statistically brilliant, but might have showed more poise. That game required good decision-making and good passing and he delivered on both.

2012 Northwestern was also a fantastic performance statistically and just from a toughness/leadership standpoint. Honorable mention for 2012 Michigan State - incredibly gutsy job to lead the team to a victory, but his interceptions are what made the comeback necessary.

The Tech game instantly came to my mind too. Also agree with Taylor against NW. While Martinez at Washington, KSU, and OSU were fun. As was his first game.

But in my opinion, the 2nd game Zac Lee played in 2009 was incredible to watch. He threw the ball so accurately well with confidence. 27-35 340 yards & 4TDs. To some degree, that's my preferred style for Quarterback. Not Lee per say, but an accurate passing QB with just a little more quickness & speed. And of course intelligence, poise, and leadership.

I thought TM's game in Stillwater was one of, if not his best passing game in his career. Too lazy to look up his stats, I just remember thinking that he may have turned the corner as a passer after that game.

It's possible that he would/could have - he got hurt against Missouri (starting the game 6/9 with a touchdown) the very next game and was never the same.

Most, but not all, of his struggles passing can be directly linked to his injuries.

Martinez against Ok St in 2010. THAT was the Martinez we all were hoping we were headed for. Pass first. Run if needed. Threat of the read option. And most of all, he HAD to be great that day. Ok St was lighting it up.

In a loss. Id have to say either Ganz against Texas tech in '08 or -what is probably really gorgotten-Martinez against Northwestern in 2011. Nothing worked that day on either side but in a year where Taylors mechanics were poor and at times embarrasing, and his passing just wasnt coming around, he slung the ball around fairly well on a day when he had to when there was nothing else to lean on.
