Damon Benning and Chad Sievers were on tonight and had a lot of things to say about the questions asked by the fans. One response in particular that really made me say "YES! That's exactly what I am talking about!" was about 2nd half adjustments. Apparently quite a few fans submitted a question asking about why NU doesn't appear to adjust in the second half, offensively. Here is his response, using the TAMU game as an example:
So, what do you have to say about what Damon had to say? It better be something because it took a while to type all that!
Later, along the same lines he said this. It was when he was talking about how field position changes play calling quite a bit. This question always bugs me a bit because I am one of those analytical guys that likes to watch how plays develop as opposed to the end result. And I think early on in that second half, Nebraska was a shaky decision away, a Brandon Jackson decision on that 3rd and 3 toss from really having a chance to put that game away. If people take a look at conceptually how that play developed with the two pulling guards, Dane Todd had a beautiful kick out, Brandon Jackson decides to cut that toss back inside. And as opposed to first down and moving the chain when Nebraska originated on their own 2 yard line, they are forced to punt. A&M conversly gets the momentum and it's kind of a downward spiral.
In the grand scheme of things over the course of the season, Nebraska's execution, I think, in the second half has almost been what I'd call lousy. You see more dropped balls, you see inability to convert 3rd down, more in the second half then you do in the first half. I don't know what that is. I think they need to come out with the mindset that in that 3rd quarter you want to put that game as far out of reach as possible. That's the way they have to approach it. But it seems from a concentration standpoint, that's the think that appears to waiver.
I think people make too big of a deal about the playcalling because I don't think the general fan really knows what the coachs are after. You don't assume the worst when you are up there calling plays. It just doesn't work like that
You can watch a replay of the show here.. There were some other good topics discussed so if you didn't catch it, you should! As an offensive coordinator, a guy that calls plays, you get a feel for what's going on out there. And it's not as easy as sitting back through the TV screen saying this what we should do
So, what do you have to say about what Damon had to say? It better be something because it took a while to type all that!
