Big Ten Considering Ineligibility for Freshman

Anyone else see this?

The Big Ten is seeking feedback from its members about the possibility of making freshmen athletes ineligible for competition as they adjust to college life.

In a statement to ESPN.com, the league says it is gauging interest from its members about a "national discussion regarding a year of readiness for student-athletes."

The league has provided background to its members about such a step but has made no official proposal at this point.
Not a fan of this myself. We have had so many freshman contribute for as long as I remember.

Yeah, let's just fall even farther behind every other conference. What high-rated recruit would want to come play in the B1G if they don't get a chance to play right away?

This would kill recruiting for big ten schools. So many freshman play right away now and play at a high level. Meyer would have a fit if this went through.

The dumbest idea Ive ever heard of!!!!! Can't believe anyone would even think of such a dumb idea let alone "gauge" members on it's viability? Pfffffffffffft?

I don't agree with this at all either. You're telling me we would have had to let a kid like DPE just sit last year? No thanks.

There are much bigger issues in college athletics that need to be addressed. This is embarrassing.

Unless it's implemented for each conference, this is a horrible idea. As previously mentioned, this would kill recruiting for the B1G.

Anyone remember when the Big 10 only allowed the conference champion to participate in a bowl?

And the frequent trouble with counting member schools?

Seems par for the course.

Maybe they think the Fab Five was a bad idea? :-)

The B1G is so traditional. I wonder if they believe this is a traditional or progressive thought?

Just weird.

This would destroy Big Ten basketball...

No 5 star basketball player would even bother...you would go JC or overseas for a year...if this happened with all the conferences I would assume that most stud high school basketball players would be playing a year in China and then hitting the draft.

I don't think some of you a reading this clearly. The Big Ten wants to possibly bring this to a national debate. They want to talk about this happening across the board, not just the Big Ten. That being said I still think it's an awful idea.

Horrible idea and no chance it happens. Although, if somehow it did end up happening I bet the SEC recruits would somehow have managed to take enough college courses in high school amd the summer and technically be college sophomores and be eligible to play

In theory, I'm fine with making Freshmen ineligible but in practice, I just think it would be a disaster.

First, it would have to be NCAA wide. There is no way in hell one conference could do this and still recruit the same talent the rest of the country does.

Second, with only 85 scholarships, all schools at some point have thin positions where Freshmen are needed to even fill the position.

This is just a bad idea.
