United Kingdom -- An estranged husband has apologized for plastering posters of his scantily clad wife around her home town.

Andrew Grigor, 33, pinned dozens of saucy snaps of Pauline on bus shelters and traffic islands. But the father-of-three says he feels so bad about the stunt - which was revealed in the Record - that he has written her a letter to say sorry.

Yesterday, Grigor said: "This was a stupid joke that backfired. I thought Pauline would see the funny side but I regret it now."

The posters showed Pauline in skimpy underwear and had "Happy 40th" scrawled across them -despite her being only 37.

The stunt - discovered by the victim's sister Debbie Charles in their home town of Galashiels - left mum-of-two Pauline devastated.

Grigor fled with girlfriend Mhairi MacFarlane to England the next day.

But Grigor, due to be quizzed by Lothian and Borders Police, started to regret the sick prank after officers contacted him at his new home in Reading, Berkshire.

The former nightclub bouncer added: "I have to come back to Scotland to be interviewed.

"I felt so bad about the whole thing that I wrote Pauline an apology."

Grigor has been separated from Pauline for more than a year. But Mhairi, Grigor's girlfriend of 10 months, was unrepentant.

She said: "We put the posters up and it was the right thing to do.

"Andrew was put through months of mental torture by that woman."

The posters, bearing Pauline's home phone number, were quickly taken down by sister Debbie, 29.

Pauline said: "I have never been so humiliated."
