Tennessee -- Hamilton County schools suspend a Contract School Bus Driver following a bizarre morning route today. According to witnesses, driver Brian Smith caused quite a bit of damage as he picked up children. News 12's Louis Lee spoke with concerned North Chattanooga parents and students.

Mary Mitchell, Concerned Parent "We're just really amazed at what we've seen."

Residents along East and West Elmwood Drives witnessed a school bus apparently out of control this morning.

Angel Headrick, Witnessed Accident "I was standing in the doorway and all of a sudden I heard this big crash. I mean, I thought he had hit a car."

Mary Mitchell, Concerned Parent "He hit a telephone pole up the road, which there's a lot of damage up there on the pole. The pole's damaged, plus there are parts of the bus up there."

Yellow paint and gashes in the pole seem to confirm how the crash started, but it was not over.

Mary Mitchell, Concerned Parent "Then hit one of the city garbage cans. Ran all the way down the street with about a hundred yards away"

Angel Headrick, Witnessed Accident "You could hear him scrapin'. And seen the bus vibratin' coming down the road."

Mary Mitchell, Concerned Parent "Came by and side-swiped the car that's parked out in front of our yard."

Jami Scoggins, Rides Bus 22 "As he pulled up I saw that there was something under there and he got out and pulled it out and it was a garbage can. And he had to go and get two other kids."

The kids helped driver Brian Smith pull the garbage can out from under the bus. Then he just drove away. Smith has been suspended by the School System pending a full investigation, but parents say he has a history of erratic behavior.

Mary Mitchell, Concerned Parent "My understanding was, anytime that they got rowdy on the bus, or things of that nature, that he would speed up and slam the brakes on. My daughter had complained of getting her head hit on a front of the seat in front of her."

The bus was back on the route this afternoon, but with a substitute driver behind the wheel. Smith appears in court November 22nd to face charges in connection with the crash. No students were injured in the incident.
