Does Bo wait till a few games in and use the blackshirts as an incentive again? Or do they get them before the first game? What do you think?

I'm guessing it plays out like last year but hopefully they earn them a little earlier in the season!

 
I think he'll hand them out again when he thinks they deserve them. If he sees the passion and effort that he wants in practice you'll see them. If not it'll be a few games into the season before they get them.

 
I bet the team will get them in time for the first game, but that's if Pelini thinks they are playing just as good or better as they did when they got them last season.

 
I am thinking they get them...so that there is a continuation off of last season good finish...but if they don't play up to blackshirt standard they can always lose them...or voluntarily turn them in.

 
Returning starters I think will have them by the first game as long as they show up in practice the way they should. However, I do not think all the starters will have them by the first game. The new starters will have to earn them just like last years team.

 
It's hard to say. I mean, how could you NOT give a guy like Suh one? It's a team effort, obviously, but a couple of those guys already earned it, so to lose it just because it's a new season (even if the effort is still there) seems unfair. But it's Bo. Whatever he does, he's probably got a reason.

I'm 99% positive that we will have them handed out before the first home game. All we have to do to keep the blackshirts is play no worse than when they were handed out last year, which will be very easy, considering our defense was still below average at the time.

What makes you think that? Bo didn't give them last year to "pump up the players." He gave them after he was reasonably satisfied with their effort and play. Why do you expect this year to be different?

 
Why would any returning Blackshirt not have them going in to this season? Unless you are someone like Phillip Dillard who will be lucky to be 3rd string this season, you should be able to keep you're Blackshirt.

because I don't think Bo takes the "every position is up for grabs" thing lightly. Nobody has earned anything for 2009 yet in his eyes.

You may be right, but it won't be for motivation any more than it would be because they actually earned them. If the previous game is not played with their best effort, no Blackshirts for Blacksburg.
