Bo and Beck

Throwing the ball 29% of the time is clearly "airing it out". It's like Beck things we have Peyton Manning back there. Beck has to learn to keep it simple and run the darn ball.

/I will say though, that last pass attempt with the game decided and a 3rd and 23, was a little perplexing. Sometimes you gotta call it a day.

I agree with you.

But to play devil's advocate with the way we used our passing downs, if Tommy isn't throwing the ball too strong and over the head of his receivers (happened multiple times Saturday, including a first down play action pass where his man was wide open and he overthrew him), how does that possibly change perceptions of the passing plays we ran?

What does Nebraska fans think about 51 rushing attempts vs 21 passing attempts? That was Saturday.

@HotHuskers I only ask because I'm trying to illustrate that sometimes" it's outside of a coaches hands. Players play, coaches coach.

It's not always about how much you pass, I think this game illustrated the problem of when we were throwing it and how quickly we were off the field.

We had I believe 5 total possessions in the fourth quarter. On the first possession we threw the ball one time on third down, Armstrong could have thrown it like he was playing catch in the back yard to Reilly, but instead he rockets it into the dirt. We ran 1:13 seconds off the clock on that drive.

2nd drive we threw again I believe on second down. We go 20 yards down the field to Westerkamp who was clearly not on the same page with Tommy. We snapped the ball on second down with 19 seconds still to burn off the play clock. Purdue intercepted this pass and I believe scored on their drive. Our 2 play drive took 31 seconds off the board. Cunningham goes out of his way the first of a few times asking "why are they throwing the ball downfield like this?"

3rd drive we don't throw at all, using the old noggin', I like it. We run three times, go three and out, but we take 2:05 seconds of the clock and the long snapper snaps the punt with 9 seconds still remaining on the play clock, so it could have been a bit more.

4th drive was where we got really dumb again. We go I formation first down, and fumble the snap. After some confusion on who recovered it is rules Nebraska ball, but Bo Pelini gets the team a 15 yard penalty tacked on. 2nd down, we once again go I formation, this time the snap is handled, but we go nowhere. Here's the most troublesome of all plays though. 3rd and 23 we come out and throw. Instead of running the clock, going with a draw or some sort of simple run gaining a few yards and punting, we actually throw the ball, unbelievable really. The pass is nearly intercepted and probably should have been. We stop the clock with the in-completion and ran 1:20 off the clock with that drive.

5th drive we took over on downs in their territory and scored on a first down run with Newby to seal the game for sure.

Thankfully, the defense played lights out except for one break down which Purdue scored upon in this quarter. Lord knows we tried to keep them in it with one interception and what easily could have been another to set Purdue up in scoring range. We went into the quarter with a 28-7 lead and only ran a total of 5:09 seconds off the game clock on five drives. Purdue possessed the ball for nearly ten minutes of that quarter and the defense stood tall. Foltz also had a few really nice punts.

I would rather our offensive formations gave Ameer a blocking fullback rather than give Armstrong a fourth receiver to worry about. Play to one's strengths and all that...

i also listened to sharp and benning for 3 hours this morning. Trust me. This doesnt tell the whole story on Damons thoughts about this offense right now. And his commentary on Beck and the current position was really interesting. Ill put it simple. I will be shocked if Tim Beck is our offensive coordinator come spring.

If that's true and the next OC comes in to work with Cotton, Fisher & co, then nothing would really have changed.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Bo has wanted to run the read option since he was hired, and we've recruited QBs for that purpose; however, it's year 7 and he still hasn't hired a guy as offensive coordinator who is an expert at that offense. Beck is a guy who desperately wants to pass the ball 30-40 times per game. It kills him to run the ball this much. We can blame Beck for the offensive inconsistencies, sure... but we also have to blame Bo. He's been a bit schizophrenic on what he wants over there. If you want to run the read option, hire an OC who runs the read option. If you want to hire Beck, recruit a QB who is a more natural passer.

I'll plus one this but I'd elaborate that Beck needs a "pocket passer". While I think Tommy could still improve in the "pocket passer" area, Beck is forcing him to be one. I think Tommy right now could flourish a bit more with some rolling out, moving the pocket, and giving him a little more freedom with his feet and arm. Purdue actually did it with Appleby quite a bit.

Do you refuse to quote people or whats the deal with that? I literally have no idea who you are responding to much of the time.

We have great receivers so I guess I am not sure what the frustration with Fisher is. He also is a good recruiter isn't he?

Ron Brown is doing a good job with the RB's.

So I think maybe the issue is with Cotton with the TE's and Garrison at OL? And Garrison is a very good recruiter as well.

It's the post right above mine, True. Sorry about that.

StPaul, a new OC would bring in a new system and that might require having his own guys. I think some of the current staff probably have a good argument to stay, but not all. I also don't know if we have great receivers, though we do have some pretty talented ones who are willing blockers.

So is Bo showing frustration with what he wants v what Beck is giving him then? Or are they on the same page? Seems like we kinda run the offense Bo wants, but obviously there are some kinks...in other words: does Bo need to publicly say that we are going to do something different, does he keep working w Beck to iron it out, or does he go in a different direction?

Anyone who know anything inside?

This. Imani is a North/South bruiser. Use him accordingly.

But this has been a constant refrain in the Beck era--trying to pound round pegs through square holes, if you will, and expecting success.
