Bo is Probably Relieved that Carl Is Gone . . .

Before people start screaming bloody murder, hear me out. I honestly think that Bo is glad that Carl is gone for two reasons.

First, the problem with hiring family is that you can never fire them. Carl was nowhere close to Bo's level and Bo realized this too late. Bo could have never taken the defense back from Carl no matter how poorly the defense performed. We can all blame multiple other things, but, the fact remains that Carl isn't Bo when it comes to running a defense. With Carl gone, Bo can run a better defense. Period. He doesn't have to worry about damaging the family dynamic by demoting or firing Carl.

Second, I think that Bo felt extra stress with his brother around. Yes, he loved his brother, but he had to cover for him. The head coach has enough problems without having to get mad about people questioning Carl's ability, or making accusations that Carl was acting like a ladies man. Whether claims are true or not, Bo emotionally had to dig deeper since it was his brother on the firing line.

Carl was a cool dude, but I'm glad he's gone. Hope Bo retakes the DC position. Bo can get back to focusing 100% on football without having to deal with the family dynamic in the meantime.

 
I think the family dynamic is why Carl choose to leave. The defense didn't perform very well this year. And it was the first year that Carl was supposed to be the main man in terms of calling the plays. That looked bad for Carl, who could easily say that graduation and injuries made it a lot harder to field a high ranking defense as the team had done in years one through three of the Pelini era. I am sure Bo and Carl had tense moments while trying to work through the defensive troubles and make the unit better.

After all that tension, Carl decided to leave, so that he wouldn't end up hating his brother.

This has got to be it because FAU's coach made little more in salary for last year than what Carl made as a coordinator. And the FAU coach has a lot more head coaching experience. Carl might get a slight pay bump over what he is getting at Nebraska, but he will also have to coach a horrible team in a state where his program would be the fifth or sixth in terms of fan base behind Florida State, Florida, Miami, South Florida, and Central Florida. Plus there is FIU.

Good luck to Carl, but make no mistake, he is leaving because of Bo, and not because he is getting a better opportunity with FAU.

Good point. I hadn't thought of it from that angle. Be that as it may, it shows why it's not a good idea to have family members on the staff. There's enough drama already on a staff.

I am sure that Carl was hoping to get a chance at a Head Coaching spot. Not sure FAU is a great move, but he must think it is time for him to take a shot, and to try to climb the ladder. I wish him the best and hope more doors open for him in his future.

I cannot --- and will not --- endeavor to try to get into the head of Bo or Carl and try to "understand" what motivates them. We can know our own motives with accuracy only after a long period of back reflection and honest assessment... and that is even difficult to do. To try to understand the motives of someone else is simply an exercise in futility.

That said, one can speak about general principles. As a rule... never, never, never hire a relative. To do so (if you have other options) is foolish, as you open yourself up to all sorts of potential problems --- problems for you, problems for your relative, and problems to the organization you work for. It is not at all complicated. Anyone in business or who hires people knows this --- do not hire a relative.

 
I once coached a competitive men's softball team, and had a good buddy on the team. At first, he was good player. However, over a few season, his skills fell out the bottom. Other players on the team were upset that I kept him on the team, as he was hurting the team. They never said anything, but you could see that look in their eyes. I finally let him go. It was a tough decision since he was a good friend. It is never good to put yourself in that position. Leave the friends and family out. Hire people who are unrelated.

I actually think it might be a pretty good move. If they are really bad (I have no idea about them) then realistically, no one will expect a huge turnaround, so that pressure is not overly intense. But if he can make them show substantial improvement and possibly be competetive, his stock will take a dramatic leap.

By the way, where is FAU located?

 
Why do people feel compelled to wrap everything in soap opera-esque story-line?

How bout this :

Bo hired his brother because Carl's a damn good coach. Carl gets hired away from NU because Carl's a damn good coach, and wants a HC job of his own.

Why can't that be enough for you people?

 
First off most people want to work with their friends or family, usually friends first but some family too.

Secondly if you go into a job thinking "I better not hire them because they might suck and I will have to fire them" then you have a sh**ty attitude to start.

Totally agree!!! Great post!

You know, sometimes life and life choices really are as simple as a plot to a porn. Not everything is a a huge cover up.

FAU is in Boca Raton, and they just started their football program in 2001.

It is a small program and it maybe challenging to get recruits, but if he has success he will get better opportunities at other programs. If they didn't have a down year on defense this season I think he would have had a better shot at a better program.
