Bo not sure lifting QB was the right thing to do

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said he has a tremendous amount of confidence in quarterback Taylor Martinez, and hinted during the Big 12 teleconference that he might have had some second thoughts about pulling the redshirt freshman against Texas.
“You look back and Taylor wasn’t the only problem,” Pelini said. “We were just looking for a spark. It’s a tough situation. He’s a young guy. You live and learn as a head coach, and I don’t know if that was the right decision to be made, but you make the decision and you move forward.”

Asked more about it later, Pelini said: “I have confidence in Taylor Martinez. I’ll just leave it at that. I have a tremendous amount of confidence in that guy. I’m not really going to revisit that anymore.”

The Nebraska offense was largely ineffective against Texas in the 20-13 loss on Saturday. Pelini and offensive coordinator Shawn Watson decided to replace Martinez with senior Zac Lee midway through the third quarter with NU trailing 20-3.

Of the Husker quarterback situation and Martinez’s spot as the starter, Pelini said: “Nothing’s changed.”

Pelini also said he isn’t worried about the mental state of the Huskers with a trip to Oklahoma State on deck.

“I think they’re anxious to get back out there and play,” he said. “We didn’t play the way we’re capable of playing the other day, and I think they’re anxious to get back out there.”

not much different then the post game, he had similar remarks to that question and was obvious he did not want to talk about it anymore. He was right about a "spark" being needed but like he also said in post game that they were NOT pointing the finger at Taylor, but I think he had the feeling that the big play would not happen with Taylor in there. Tough call for a coach in that situation, but 2nd guessing now doesn't help...

While Lee provided at least a decent "spark," I would've been just fine seeing a change in playcalling as opposed to a change in personnel. They dared us to pass and Martinez was mostly on the money in spite of our catching deficiencies, so why not try to open up the passing game more to see what he's really made of? Obviously it could backfire, but if he would've been able to complete some passes, Texas would've tightened up coverage and gone to a pass rush mode, and that would've enabled Martinez to get the wheels going b/c the holes certainly would've opened up. No doubt the "what ifs" are to great to number at this point, so we might as well do what Bo wants to do anyway, and that is move on to the next game.

i wonder whos shoulders that decision really falls on. bo's? or watsons? and if watson, is that a nail in the coffin considering bo's comments?

Well, Bo is choosing to get behind his QB, instead of saying "He'll have to earn his spot this week." I guess that's not unexpected, or wrong.

Martinez was not even remotely close to being "on the money" with all his passes! We had near completions because nobody was in the same zip code as those receivers. And while some of those near completions were on the receiver, others were on Taylor. Even that long pass to Paul. I think the right place would have been just to lead him instead of making him break off his go and turn inside.
