Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said he has a tremendous amount of confidence in quarterback Taylor Martinez, and hinted during the Big 12 teleconference that he might have had some second thoughts about pulling the redshirt freshman against Texas.
“You look back and Taylor wasn’t the only problem,” Pelini said. “We were just looking for a spark. It’s a tough situation. He’s a young guy. You live and learn as a head coach, and I don’t know if that was the right decision to be made, but you make the decision and you move forward.”
Asked more about it later, Pelini said: “I have confidence in Taylor Martinez. I’ll just leave it at that. I have a tremendous amount of confidence in that guy. I’m not really going to revisit that anymore.”
The Nebraska offense was largely ineffective against Texas in the 20-13 loss on Saturday. Pelini and offensive coordinator Shawn Watson decided to replace Martinez with senior Zac Lee midway through the third quarter with NU trailing 20-3.
Of the Husker quarterback situation and Martinez’s spot as the starter, Pelini said: “Nothing’s changed.”
Pelini also said he isn’t worried about the mental state of the Huskers with a trip to Oklahoma State on deck.
“I think they’re anxious to get back out there and play,” he said. “We didn’t play the way we’re capable of playing the other day, and I think they’re anxious to get back out there.”
