Talk about a couple of arrest warrants with bite. In the Bay State's latest gator escapade, Eastham and Middleboro police nabbed two American alligators Sunday. The first, found by 7-year-old Hunter Magee outside his Eastham home, weighed only a couple of pounds.

"He was very nervous and hissing and making this weird croaking and groaning sound,'' said Mark Hatch, Hunter's stepfather. He broomed the unwelcome visitor into a plastic tub.

"I give them a lot of credit for capturing it, I was relieved,'' said Eastham Police Sgt. Mark Haley, who responded to the alligator alert.

"I was glad when we found that the mother wasn't around.''

The second gator, at Stumps Pond in Middleboro, was 4 1/2 feet long and nearly 20 pounds. Cops tried luring it with hamburger from "The Cabin'' eatery nearby, but it took a whole chicken to do the job.

The water just exploded when he came out,'' said Environmental Police Officer Lorne D. Estabrook.

Both beasts were taken to Rainforest Reptile Shows in Beverly.

"We actually think somebody is letting these things go,'' Estabrook said. "We have a pretty good idea who it is and we are getting close to catching them.''
