Bowl Alignments - B1G at Disadvantage

So the B1G has had a pretty poor bowl record over the last 5 or so years. IMO this is due some unfavorable bowl alignments over the years. Look at this year's alignments for power conference (ACC, B1G, B12, PAC, SEC) vs non power conference match ups

PAC - 4 non power conference games

ACC - 4 games

SEC - 2 games

B12 - 1 game

B1G - NONE

Now if the B1G had a few more games over the years vs MAC, CUSA, BE, its record would be a little more respectable.

The B1G has 1 - but we keep managing to not have enough bowl eligible teams to go to the bowl in Detroit.

It'll be a bit better starting next year once the playoffs start - still just one non-major bowl (the yet to be formally announced Detroit Lions bowl) but the bowl ordering will be better so that we're not matching up lower picks than the opposing team as often.

The fact that the conference will have more of a say in who goes to which bowl will play a factor as well.

2012-13 Bowl Alignments (games vs non-power conferences)

PAC - 3

ACC - 3

B12 - 1

SEC - 3

B1G - NONE

There's also been some mis-parings due to OSU-PSU bowl sanctions. 2012 - 6 loss UR Wisc vs 2-loss top 10 Stanford, 2012 B1G #7 Purdue vs B12 #4 OSU, 2011 B1G #7 Iowa vs B12 #2 Oklahoma.

The last couple years haven't been helped by bowl bans. We would have been able to fill the bottom bowl this year which could have been a win and most teams were slid up one spot if not two in the order last year.

One other point, B1G has not had any gimmie BCS matchups vs the likes of UConn, Cincy, Hawaii, Utah, Boise, N. Illinois, UCF,Syracuse and overrated ND teams like the SEC, ACC and B12 have.

Excellent point. The Orange Bowl has been almost a joke for the past decade and the Fiesta Bowl hasn't always been a lot better.

Never looked at those stats, usually I just noticed all the teams we play in their home state, but adding these stats on top makes the whole inter conference bowl win ratios even more irrelevant.

I would like to applaud Maryland and Rutgers for approaching their bowl games in true big ten fashion. The Domers and Marshall? Ouch.

B-dubs bowl was B1G #5 vs B12 #4; Holiday Bowl is PAC #2 vs B12#5 ---why don't they try to even these out?
