Big Ten tells its bowl teams one could be snubbed; is it likely?

The Big Ten has nine allotted bowl slots this 2014 postseason. That's a lot! But it still might not be enough.
That's because after Illinois' win over Northwestern the previous Saturday, the Big Ten has 10 bowl-eligible teams. Per ESPN and the Associated Press, a league official e-mailed the member schools to alert them to the possibility that one of those 10 teams could miss out on postseason play.

Beat Minnesota. Beat Penn State. Beat Northwestern. Played Wisconsin to within 10 points. And still might get passed over for Penn State with identical record. That just ain't fair.

I did a quick count, may be off, but I got 82 bowl eligible teams with 2 more possible, to fill 76 spots. 6-8 teams will be left out. I think it's more likely the left out teams will come from the Sun Belt, Mac, Mtn West, C-USA and AAC. I could 6 6-6 teams out of those conferences plus Temple from the AAC is one that needs a win to be eligible at 6-6, plus there are some 7-5 teams in those conferences that could be shorted. I haven't really done any analysis to see if those conferences have guaranteed bowls for all of those teams but often they don't. I think the Sun Belt just has 3 guaranteed spots, and has 6 eligible teams, with only 2 better than 7-5.
