Illinois teen accused of trying to bribe Nebraska troopers

KEARNEY — An 18-year-old from Illinois has been charged with bribery after allegedly offering to share more than $27,000 with two Nebraska troopers if they wouldn’t arrest him.

John Roman of Oak Lawn was charged in Buffalo County Court with felony bribery, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted of bribing the troopers. The other charges carry $100 fines.

Court records say Roman was a passenger in a vehicle stopped June 6 on Interstate 80 near Minden. Troopers were given permission to search the vehicle and found a safe containing $27,640 in $20 and $50 bills.

Court records say Roman twice offered to share the money with troopers in exchange for his release, but they refused.

Roman is being held in the Buffalo County Detention Center.
