Brett Maher in Stewart Mandel's latest article

International Man of Mystery
For kickers, the mental aspect of the position is "easily more than half of it," said Nebraska's Maher. "If you're not mentally strong and sharp, I don't think it matters how far you can kick it."
Lots more by and about Maher and other kickers: Despite perception, college kickers never better -- or more relevant

It's good to see Maher getting some recognition. He more than emerged from the long shadow cast by Alex Henery last year, and he should be money again this year. After he's gone, we'll have Guido Bondi ready to step in with the big leg.

We're fast becoming Kicker U.

Good article. Man, it's really nice to recall how talented we've been with kickers for quite some time. Not only with clutch FG's, but how important is field position? I talked to Jesse Kosch a couple of years ago and he basically reiterated how the coaches preached about the importance of turning the field on opponents...not only with good kicks, but good coverage as well (something that's been lacking a bit lately). Of course, Kosch was pretty fortunate to play for 3 National Champ teams that could probably beat anyone if he averaged 4 yards a punt, but that's beside the point :)

By the way, if you're ever out in Estes Park, stop by Big Red of the Rockies, a nice Husker shop in downtown Estes run by...Jesse Kosch. A real nice guy, but surprised he can hear these days. I had a Sociology night class back in the day and sat by him, and the volume of death metal coming out of his headphones when he came in even surprised me.

I think Byron Bennett was the first kicker I ever yelled at.
Did he yell back?
He was too far away to know GSG was yelling at him. People inside the tv can't hear things when you yell at them, The Dude.
What? What? Of COURSE they can!!! That's how we send them our Mojo!!! I would be utterly crushed if I didn't know that the people inside of the tv couldn't hear me because that would mean that I yell my head off every time I watch our beloved Huskers play for nothin'!!! ;)
