BTN: Best All-Time B1G Player From Each State

Quite a few Huskers on this list. 11 by my count. Didn't count to see how other schools did.

This got me thinking: Who are the best all-time Big Ten players born in each state, and can such a list be created?

I put my research cap on and began mapping out a list of Big Ten greats and where they are from. I began by creating a list of my top Big Ten players of all time, and then began filling in the blanks, state-by-state. Some, of course, were more difficult than others to find.

Keep in mind, this list is based on college careers, and not what these players did in the NFL.

Huskers were well represented. 11 of 50 states (22%) but we're only 1 of 14 teams (7%).

Little bit of butt hurt being exhibited in the comments section of that article. Somebody doesn't like Suh, Rozier, Frazier etc. being listed as B1G players since they never actually played in that conference. I can kind of see that point of view.

BTW, they listed Lawrence Phillips as being from Arkansas? Guess I never heard that before. Must've just been born there because he came to us from that foster care situation in Cali.

I don't like using where a guy was born to say where he's "from". To me LP was from Cali. I never knew he was born in Arkansas.
My son was born outside Chicago, but he lived there for 6 weeks before we moved away.

None of the other schools even come close to number of picks on that.

That obviously doesn't mean we're the greatest thing ever, but it means we've defied the odds while recruiting nationwide for essentially all of our relevant history.

Okay I was curious so I counted them.

Nebraska 11. Only 1 of the 11, Ameer, actually played in the Big Ten conference.

Michigan 6

Michigan State 5

Northwestern 4

Penn State 4. Also only 1 of the 4 played in the B1G.

Purdue 4

Illinois 3

Iowa 3

Minnesota 3

Ohio State 2

Wisconsin 2

Indiana 1

Maryland 1

Rutgers 1

Guess I'm surprised that tOSU and Penn State didn't have higher counts. tOSU has been fairly relevant for quite awhile yet all they could muster was their home state of Ohio and Colorado. Among other things, I thought it was funny that Nebraska recorded New Jersey with Rozier and it didn't go to Rutgers or Penn State. I guess that's because Mike was so darned good but still seems odd some of the states we logged in this deal.

Ohio is one of the top 5-8 states in the country as far as high school football talent, and OSU has been king for essentially forever. Makes sense that they wouldn't have a lot of people on this list, because literally 90-95% of their players are from the same state.

Good point LOMS. I guess they would get a bunch of their talent in state. Still seems like they should've bagged a couple more states though.

Thought our list was interesting;

Alaska, Hawaii, and Maine- covering the far flung states (a couple not well known for football talent).

Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Mississippi- a good chunk of the SEC recruiting hot bed.
