Pretty good idea to talk to our B1G opponents to get an idea what you can do against these teams, and to see how they can hurt you. No predictions, but stats and analysis from Big Ten OC's & DC's.

Nebraska Scouting Report:

I think (Taylor) Martinez is really good. He is as fast as can be and he really got us a couple of times. I think Nebraska is a lot harder to defend (than Wisconsin). … How do you stop Nebraska? You have to be very disciplined. We overemphasized something going into our game with them and they didn’t do it, which hurt us on one of (Martinez’s) big runs. Regardless of how bad people think he is throwing the ball, he can make throws and he runs that offense. There is a reason why they are the No.1 offense in the Big Ten. … I thought they had the best receivers we saw all year. Kenny Bell is really good.

Wisconsin Scouting Report

(Tight end Jacob) Pedersen made some plays on us. He’s good. He ran some crossing routes that our safeties didn’t adjust to early. … They aren’t really complicated on defense, but they are really good at what they do. They don’t try to trick you as far as bringing a bunch of blitzes and lining up in different fronts. Everyone knows how to fit, they know where they want to be and that’s what makes them so tough. You aren’t ever going to get them out of alignment or in a mismatch. That’s what gives them a chance to be successful. … I don’t think they have the greatest athletes up front or are explosive. But they have guys who know what their role is. … The secondary is good. I wouldn’t say it’s great. I think Nebraska’s receivers will match up well with their secondary. Nebraska does a good job throwing the deep ball. I think Nebraska can take advantage of some things in the Wisconsin secondary. …

Good stuff. I found this one interesting and hope we watch the play action and double moves. Didn't seem to be as big of a deal in the second half of the season. Need to be mindful of the delays where they slip a FB or TE into the middle.

"The Nebraska safeties and linebackers will have to be involved in stopping the run, and then Wisconsin can come back with play-action. That’s hard for a defense that commits to stopping the run to deal with. That’s an area Wisconsin has to be licking its chops over because of how aggressive Nebraska is. …"

Love articles like that, gives you a perspective on what other coaches think of our team. Sounds like they like what we are doing and hate to play us.

This, IMO, more than anything contributed to our great run in he 80's and 90's. Majority of teams we played were mentally beat before a down had been played. We need to get to this level again (think we are) where teams truly hate to play us as they know win, lose or draw it will be a 4 quarter a$$ kicking.

^I'd bet the farm that the above quote is Michigan State DC Narduzzi

That was exactly my thought as well. It was apparent Taylor caught MSU by surprise on a few of his long runs.

Yeah, they are very impressed with our receivers and how we run the offense! Loved that. One thing I noticed they were down on: our defensive front. One coach said he probably overestimated the Nebraska DL. Also noted that we frequently roll the safeties down to run support and if you can force our backfield to commit like that to stop the run, then playaction over the top can beat us. Also, that we use the LBs to stop the run too a lot and it opens things up for the TEs, in theory.

(Well, in practice, too, just look at the UCLA tape.)

Sounds like our offense matches up just right with against their defensive weaknesses.

Also sounds like it's still going to be a battle and our boys better be buckling down hard in film and practice.

I think the big difference between now and the first game as far as NU is concerned is that they defense is more confident in what they are trying to do. Even with Steiny out the LB's are playing at a much higher level than they were earlier in the year. Whaley and Fisher are playing pretty well right now and Compton has been very steady. Staffard has finally turned into the player he was suppose to be and PJ Smith is playing really well also.

Wisky is going to get some yards rushing, that is going to happen, the thing that Nebraska needs to do is make them go the length of the field. Three of there 4 scoring drives started inside our 50 in the first game that is what made the game so close.

Don't freak out if Ball ends up with about 120 rushing. If it takes him 30 carries to do it than NU is doing a good job agianst him. Shut down the passing and the game will be ours.
