Carl Pelini: NU Offense 'in a Whole Different World'

Nexus

All-American
If you want a progress report on Nebraska's new offensive system, take it straight from the Huskers' fourth-year defensive coordinator: "Our offense is making a solid transformation," Carl Pelini said. "We already have some bread-and-butter stuff we can hang our hat on, and we're getting good."
Getting good? How good?

That's a very good article.

The two biggest things I took from it though are #1. We currently have absolutely nothing at the RB position behind Rex. IF that doesn't change when the new blood gets here in the fall we'll be in BIG trouble. and #2.. did he really have to bring out the multiple word? I don't know if I can handle any more of the multiple talk after last season - even if it is on Defense.

I want to see how we are halfway through our season. Once we get into the heart of our schedule. When were in a tough ball game. I'm very optimistic but this offense still has to prove itself.

Multiple is one of those words that you think you know, but aren't really sure. So you ask "Coach Carl" to be more descriptive.
"If we're going to be that good in our base defense, then we need to have more bullits in the gun," he explained. "We will always continue to play our base defense, but we need to have that threat of movement - the ability to blitz and the threat to become more multiple by using our speed and our athleticism."
I dunno if more multiple is such a bad thing. Carl just means more blitzing and shifting formations before the snap. Our great defenses of the 90's did this a lot. With good results.

all the talk of great receivers ... Carl said that could be a strength. Either there's a huge improvement, Carl's blowing smoke or other positions aren't as good. I'm thinking smoke, but hoping for improvement.

We have 5-7 RB's coming in in the fall.

1. Aaron Green - 5'11" 195

2. Ameer Abdullah - 5'9" 185

3. Murat Kuzu - 5'11" 190

4. Richard Wynee Jr. - 5'9" 180

5. Possibly Dagan Reed - 5'11" 195

6. Possibly Mike Marrow - 6'2" 240

7. Possibly Braylon Heard - 5'11" 180

Now... Even if 2-3 of those guys don't make it to campus, I guarantee you that at least 1 of the others will step up to take the #2 spot. Especially since the RB position on offense is the easiest to immediately learn and play in. Aaron Green has been tweeting me that he's at about 200 lbs right now. Ameer is at 185. Braylon has been watching practice from the side lines and is currently living in Lincoln. Kyler says Dagan is going to walk on in the fall. Mike and Vince say he's going to transfer for the fall. Richard Wynee Jr. had 1600 yards his senior season and is said to be a steal as a walk on. Murat Kuzu went to school with Rex and was coached by the same crew. Someone is going to step up. My guess is that 2-3 guys will step up and the rest will redshirt, giving us more depth next year.

wow, suddenly a crappy offensive line and pathetic receivers from last season are magically better..i will reserve judgement on that.....a no huddle offense is not a cure-all.

There also was a season not too long ago, where we had an unproven d-line. And in the preseason, crazy Carl said that it would be a strength of the team. Most wrote him off then too. Just sayin.

I saw of video of #4 Ty Kildow 5'7" 180lbs trying to block #31 C.J. Zimmerer 6'0" 235lbs. I felt sorry for Ty, but give him props for trying. lol

Is it too soon to Rich Fisher the greatest WR coach ever yet? We better bump his pay before he starts getting offers...

But anywho, I don't think the defense getting befuddled in practice is that big of a deal quite yet. They've spent the last three years defending the same lame duck offense in practice, defending something new in practice will take time too. I'm optimistic too, but I'm never going to be low on skepticism either.
