Carl Pelini says tackling is lack

LINCOLN — If there's one area that Carl Pelini wants to see his defense improvement in immediately, it's tackling.

 

That points the arrow directly at the linebackers: Will Compton, Sean Fisher and Blake Lawrence.

 

At times, the Huskers' young backers still appear overmatched, slow to shed blockers and, when there was a collision, quick to fall back.

 

The apparent lack of aggression and physical toughness may be a result of youth and inexperience, not willpower.

 

“They're all aggressive, physical guys,” Pelini said. “You put them in a tackling drill and they're going to rip someone's head off.”

 

The difficulty, Pelini said, is having that mentality “after they've made the checks, taken the correct alignments, checked the receivers, checked the coverage.”

 

“To me, it's almost a confidence thing,” Pelini said. “It is a willingness to let yourself go. Once you recognize and you see it, you go and you go and you go and you go to the ball and make the play in a physical way.”

It's hard to say whether this is all a smokescreen heading into VA Tech, or if we're legitimately struggling to put pressure on opposing QBs. Logic says that if you want to play at a high level in your "tough" games, you should play at a high level in all of your games. We're not seeing that.

Either these guys are messed up in the head, or they're not as good as we'd hoped, or our opponents are much better than we've been led to believe. In the end none of that matters - what matters is, we haven't put up a defensive effort like we thought we would yet, and we're heading into a big game against an opponent that can beat a lackluster team, without having put it together yet on the field.

Can we win this game? Sure. Have we shown yet that we're ready to win this game? Not based on the performances we've put in our last two weeks.

Couldn't agree with you more, we have the talent, but we need to put it all together to be effective.

You can have the athletic ability in the world and be relentless as a player, but when you are physically overmatched by 300lbs+ offensive linemen, it doesn't really matter.

The good and the bad about this - in the conference games their strength disadvantages will not show as much seeing as how we will see so many spreads and more wide open offenses. Our base defenses will almost become the nickel and dime.

The downside - against someone as physical as Tech will be this weekend, their disadvantages are going to be put on display.

My hope - put 8 or 9 in the box almost every single play. I want us to literally dare Tyrod to beat us with his arm. If he can, then more power to him. Legitimately, I don't think he can though.

The Huskers have had some busts so far this season, but, as long as they don't give up long touchdown plays, we should be fine. The defense can bend, it just needs to get Tech stopped before it gets into scoring range.

I think our secondary has enough experience to the point we can stack the box, put our corners n safeties in man, and pressure Taylor to pass. In the Bama game he looked terrible passing and I have more confidence in our secondary this year than years past.
