Can anybody share some insight as to why Thenarase and Smith lost their blackshirts? Did Cassidy and Osborne beat them out on the practice field?

And knapplc, I think David has a blackshirt.

I think Thenarse getting benched the last two games is why he lost his.

I guess my question more or less is if anybody knows why he was benched? My best guess is that he got beat out in practice because it seemed like he was having a pretty good year. I didn't see him making mistakes or giving up the big play.

 
Thenarse was not having a good year. He was one of the main culprits on Pelini's famous quote about the 28 missed tackles against Texas. Rickey has been hitting people without wrapping up all season. It really started to bite him in conference play, and since he didn't seem willing to fix it, he got benched.

 
Thenarse has probably already played his last meaningfull downs at Nebraska. I think PJ has a chance to be a very good player for us this year and the years to come.

So Martin didnt ever have one this year?

 
Smith was doing alright until he started missing tackles along with the rest of the secondary, except he didn't improve his tackling like the rest of the other starters. He's still playing, and I do think once he gets rid of whatever's wrong with his tackling he'll get back into the lineup.

 
Eric Martin = the next Ricky Thenarse

He may never contribute in a major way on defense.

Osborne and Cassidy deserve their blackshirts. They have both played very well for the most part. Osborne fixed every problem that we were having at safety in that Mizzou game. I am excited about our safety depth for next year.

Couldn't agree more. I never did think Martin would be a major factor at LB with his "play by my own rules" mentality.

 
Obviously Martin doesnt have much between the ears. Has all the physical tools in the world just not the understanding of the defense and instincts to play for Bo on Saturday's. (Except on special teams where he unleashes his inner beast)
