Lincoln, NE -- A 50-year-old Lincoln man faces seven misdemeanor charges for allegedly keeping nearly 150 cats in his basement.
Animal control officers said they found 146 cats in Rickey Meyer's basement last year after someone complained of a strong odor of ammonia coming from the house.
Officials had to destroy about 30 cats. The Capital Humane Society saw close to 60 adopted, and a local animal shelter, the Cat House, took 43, about 30 of which were adopted.
Meyer is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 3. He's charged with owning more than five adult cats and failing to obtain rabies shots and a license for a cattery. He also is charge with cruelty, failing to keep the cats in a sanitary condition and failing to provide adequate veterinary care.
