CBS Sports: Big Ten West Over/Unders

Saunders

Heisman Trophy Winner
Picking an over/under win total is the perfect combination of season preview and betting. You must analyze a team's schedule, look at the returning and incoming classes and predict a general pecking order for each conference. Today I take a look at the Big Ten's other division, the West. It's a division that's nearly impossible to figure out heading into the season, but I did my best to break down each member's chances of surpassing its expected win total for the season.

For the uninitiated, totals reflect regular season contests only (no conference title or bowl games) and lines are current at 5Dimes as of Wednesday. (Plus-odds indicate a bettor earns more money back than wagered if the bet pays off, minus-odds the opposite; a bet at +120 earns $120 for every $100 wagered, a bet at -120 requires $120 wagered to win $100).

Well, to be fair, the Clones DID surprise some damn good Husker teams here and there over the years.

On the other hand, isn't Iowa something like 4-12 against ISU in the last 15 years?

I'd hate to have a trip to ISU be described as 'tricky' if I were a Hawks fan, though. That's just embarrassing.

ISU in that tiny stadium that ALWAYS seemed to be windy and cold, wasnt any trip to grandmas

In the late 70s, their fans were down right nasty- one of the worst student sections around- Dexter Green era

LOTS of car vandalism, guy parked right next to me lost both a window, antenna and a tire

Iowa St has had some decent coaches in the past Earl Bruce was a great coach during the Dexter Green era that went on to coach at Ohio St.

Dan McCarney was the best thing that ever happened to ISU and then they got tired of winning 7-9 games a year and fired him after a bad season. Very Stupid indeed.

As far as fans go they are like all the rest of the old big 8. They hate Nebraska, They would have rather beat Nebraska than any other team. For some reason the hate was never quite as intense for Oklahoma. So whenever they did get a little revenge they would get downright ugly. Went to college in Missouri, any time NU lost I got more downright nasty remarks from guys in my fraternity than you would believe. The hate for Nebraska football was intense in Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Colorado in the days of the old big 8

I taught school with a guy that was at the 92' game that NU lost. A very bad loss jmfb if I a may say so, anyway he said at the beginning of the game the ISU fans were ok, but by the time the 4th quarter rolled around it was really ugly and nasty what some of the people were saying.

So, they've got Nebraska at 8 at recommend taking the under.

I would say 8 on the dot is the expectation, but they make a good point. With all the tumult, Nebraska could easily go 2-2 in the OOC slate and would need to go 6-2 to reach 8. This is a team that has gone 5-3 in each of the past two years in conference.

It's pretty hard not to expect that to continue.

That said, I really don't think/hope we lose to both BYU and Miami. 3-1/5-3 and 8 wins sounds very reasonable. We should HOPE for an immediate turnaround and I know many do. I just feel this is a process (hurl) that could easily take some time to come together -- if it comes together. Not to be a downer, but next-level success is by no means assured.

That said, let's put Nebraska back on the map as a class program and a place where coaches don't have to be bitter at fans and bemoaning recruiting disadvantages -- and then let's build from there, whether that's Riley still, or the next guy.

And well, this year, let's hope he does break out.

Nebraska, 8 wins (Over -150, Under +110)

Right off the bat I have to tell you that I really like the value of the under here. The Cornhuskers will be going through a bit of a transition this season, as Mike Riley takes over for Bo Pelini and begins the process of implementing a pro-style offense with a quarterback who really isn't designed for it. Nebraska also has to replace a lot of key talent from last year's team and most of its offensive line. The season starts with a tough game against BYU, and then there's a road trip to Miami a few weeks later. In other words, this team could be 2-2 heading into conference play, and that would mean the Huskers would need to go 7-1 in Big Ten play to hit the over. Even if they go 3-1 in non-conference play, they'd still need to go 6-2, and that won't be easy against a schedule that includes Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan State. So with the extra juice on the under here, it's just too enticing to pass up. UNDER 8 WINS

The extra juice was on under a few weeks ago, so apparently Nebraska just got better.

The West is "nearly impossible to figure out" eh CBS? No. Wisky, NU. That's it. Pick one. (Minny will be down a bit this year).

My prediction. Nebraska won't be trying to implement a pro style offense.
This I agree with non of these experts watched the spring game.

The running game was not drastically different. I was actually surprised at how similar it was.

Passing game IMO will actually be simpler, not as much reading defenders and more defined passing routes. Makes qb reads easier.

I think we will see more screen game which is more pro style.

1. If you think that Nebraska will have an offense that DOESN'T look like OSU you are crazy

2. Vegas is BRILLIANT that line is bonkers good.

I see 11 wins. I see TA completing 60 or 63 percent of his passes and I see DPE with 750 yards receiving and 500 yards rushing
