characteristics of classic husker teams

For point of reference I'd say 2003 and before. And I don't mean formations or plays but...everything else, mentality, personality and what not.

I mean what I always thought of was a defense that swarmed to you, that played with what seemed like reckless abandon who had players who litterally wanted to see your helmet rolling down the field 5 yards away with the qbs head still in it.

An offense that would rather punch you in the mouth and make you spit out your teeth rather then run away from you. And an offensive line who brought their lunch pails and just out farmered you.

  1. Fundamentally well coached: (Team didn't beat themselves)
  2. Aggressive, swarming defense: (Blackshirts that would pride themselves on stopping the run first, and then creating chaos on the pass rush)

Winning in the trenches: (Big, tough, dominant offensive line. Fast, nasty & determined defensive line)
SPECIAL Special Teams: (Emphasizing the control of field position)
Field Generals: (Players taking ownership of the results on the field)
Strength Training & Conditioning: (Players in elite "football shape." Would pass the eye test. Fluke injuries would be at the minimum)

A deep sense of pride in the "N" on the side of their helmut. A young man might not understand that concept coming in their freshman year but they sure understood it by the end of their freshman year.

They played angry on both sides of the ball.

They might lose, but were never beaten.

Disciplined,sound in technique and fundamentals.

They had depth.

Superior coaching.

A tangible identity on both sides of the ball.

Mean and nasty.

Never half stepped, quit or took a play off.

Played for the N, each other, the state and the fans.

These were great points! +1

If I had to break it down to one thing it would be that they controlled the line of scrimmage. Accomplish that and most of the other stuff will take care of itself.

You should make that 1997 and before. Frank sucked just as much (if not more) the the two that follwed him. If he didn't have four years of Tom's players, he would have been fired in less than the 4 years that they played for him.

This and speed on defense. No more slow a$$ line backers that Bo seemed to recruit.
