Chatelain: Pin this loss squarely on Mike Riley and Danny Langsdorf

Saunders

Heisman Trophy Winner
Following an uninspired fourth-down call — wouldn’t a punt have been more effective? — Illinois marched 72 yards and won the game.
The honeymoon is over, folks. Nebraska is 2-3. Mike Riley and Danny Langsdorf lost this football game with dreadful mismanagement, not just of the clock, but of the entire offense.
Over and over, rather than feeding Ozigbo and Andy Janovich, they let Armstrong heave deep balls like a fourth-grader playing “500” at recess. This was Bill Callahan at Iowa State in 2004. This was Shawn Watson at Missouri in 2009 (luckily, Ndamukong Suh bailed him out that night). This was a debacle far worse than Texas ’09 or Wisconsin ’12.

Yea, I couldn't figure out all the deep heaves on third and short early in the game, either. Armstrong just leans back on his back foot, and chucks into double or triple coverage. At what point, do we say, the weather wasn't responsible for every incompletion?

This game was so incredibly painful.

Dirty d!(k nails it, obviously. Our offense had no direction or trajectory the entire damn game. Unbelievable.

The running game of this offense looks like flag football. Pin the loss on the coaching staff? No kidding?

Chatelain makes some decent points, mainly that Riley's honeymoon is over. But this loss is nowhere close to as bad as some recent losses, such as Wisconsin last year or 2012, or UCLA in 2013.

It's one thing to lose by being out schemed or efforted, but you can't lose by being stupid, which This loss was.

Illinois is, at best, the worst team we've lost to since ISU 2009.

Illinois is probably the worst team, but this wasn't the worst loss. Watching helplessly as Melvin Gordon sets the NCAA f'ing record for rushing yards was 10x worse. Watching unranked 7-5 Wisconsin boatrace 10-2 Nebraska for 70 points is 10x worse.

At least ISU 2009 could run the ball.

And there's no excuse or justification for this loss, bottom line. Only way I see there not being an open revolt by the fans is if Riley cans Banker and Langsdorf at the end of the season and replaces them with coaches that will fog up a mirror when held up to their mouth.
