Clock Management

Illinois wasn't quite as bad so perhaps we're getting better but we could still shave some time off. It's not like it's hard to see the play clock.

I can't wrap my head around how this is such an issue 5 games in after it has cost us two games and almost a third.

Ya, this game I actually thought they did fairly well with snapping the ball with little time on play clock. The problem this week was absolute ignorance to time as far as play calling.

It shouldn't be if our staff was truly made up with experienced professional teachers as we were told they were.
It just completely lacks all coherent thought. I've seen teams led Peyton Manning run the ball three straight times on the ground to try and milk the clock. Even teams with one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game doesn't rely on his throwing ability to run the game out unless they have to.

Watching our offense, I get the feeling they're trying really hard to call run/pass the same way pro teams do, and it's just not working at this level. And it's not just this way at the end of the game where you're trying to get a win - it's the whole 60 minutes. It's one thing to throw the football when you've got players that can do it well and the conditions are right. It's another thing to put TA in bad positions that result in short drives and punts.

I'm mainly disappointed for two reasons - one, this staff hasn't appeared as promised and suggested. They appear to try too hard to get players to do things they're not capable of and their experience isn't showing up when it matters most.

One more note to add.

The guys on USC on 1620 today spent part of their show looking up instances of Mike Riley and poor clock management during his time at Oregon St. They found probably a handful of articles that mentioned a failure of clock management in some fashion in relation to a Riley coached game in the 5-6 minutes they spent searching online. I didn't hear all of the discussion, but they referred to it as a 'pattern' at some point during their conversation. So, clearly it's been an issue in the past.

That said, when you're a head coach anywhere, you're probably going to have games where you flub your clock management. And when you're a head coach as long as he's been, he's probably seen just about everything. But, it's certainly unnerving to know that we've had serious management issues in three of our five games this season.

4/5 games. We had some issues before half time in the Miami game.
