Coaches, Revenues Pushing B1G Toward Top

Head coaches: The roster of head coaches in the Big Ten right now is as impressive as any league in the country.

Ohio State’s Urban Meyer and Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh are the rock stars. Wisconsin’s Paul Chryst and Penn State’s James Franklin were both finalists for numerous national coach of the year awards. Michigan State had an awful 2016, but Mark Dantonio is rightly considered one of the very best coaches around.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz and Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald are two of the longest-tenured head coaches in college football. Nebraska’s Mike Riley is highly respected throughout the profession. Illinois hired longtime NFL coach Lovie Smith last year, and Purdue and Minnesota made splashes in landing two of the hottest, young, non-Power 5 coaches in Jeff Brohm and P.J. Fleck, respectively, this offseason.

...

Financial muscle: It’s a good time to be someone who writes checks at a Big Ten school these days.

The cash spigot that is the Big Ten Network continues to pay huge dividends, especially since Rutgers and Maryland joined the league. In the fiscal year that ended in June 2015, according to USA Today, the Big Ten distributed $32.4 million to member schools that had full shares (Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland did not). The money is about to go up, up, up.

Thanks for that nic, as I have two eyes and it was imperative for my left eye to confirm what my right eye was seeing.

Just kidding

Ha ha. I was on mobile phone. I hit post twice I guess. Its good to emphasize it though. Its a lot of money.

So what's everyone doing with their newfound treasures? I know Purdue is investing heavily in their Football program.

Maryland is paying off debt and might start to bring back the sports they cut.
Maryland has to "pay back" the B1G for an advance they got as well, right? They'll get reduced revenue to pay it back I think.

I think so but I lost track. They got more early but probably won't get a full share for many years.

Maryland got 24 mil in 2015 and we're loaned an additional 11 mil. Rutgers got 10.5 mil in 2015.

Some info from Delany at the Big Ten media days.

"Per media reports, the league stands to make an average of $440 million annually in this new television deal, as ESPN/ABC and FOX will share football rights through 2023 and CBS will have basketball-only rights to some league games during that same span.

The entire pact is expected to see the Big Ten gain $2.64 billion throughout the deal -- which will only increase the annual payout the league provides to its full-member schools.

Full-member made around $36 million last year and are expected to receive more than $50 million starting next year, thanks to the new television contract."

NU is a full member this year, right? 50 million. Ka-ching!

Yep Michigan had their estimated share leaked and it was 51.1 to be exact. Looking back at their estimates they are usually correct within 1 million. And yea Huskers got fully vested just in time for the money tree. Rutgers I believe is another 3 years away and Maryland will be paying some bills back for a bit as well.
