With up and coming coaches...where does Zac Taylor fall compared to Frost? Seems Zac is making his way up the ranks now with Cincy as OC.

With up and coming coaches...where does Zac Taylor fall compared to Frost? Seems Zac is making his way up the ranks now with Cincy as OC.

Zac will never have the goodwill here that Frost has for 2 reasons: he played for Callahan and his is a west coast offense guy

Really? How much 'goodwill' does Scott Frost really have? He shunned NU and Tom Osborne's scholarship offers to go with Bill Walsh and the West Coast offense and he was a small town Nebraska kid with NU family ties. Why does everyone seem to have such a crush on Scott Frost? He was a great athlete and did well as a Nebraska QB although he would have been an outstanding LB or tight end or Defensive end or whatever position. Probably a great punter too. But a head coach ? I think we need to see a great deal more production frankly.

Frost has plenty of goodwill. The guy led NU to a national championship, and has been a very good young coach in college football. Are there people that are butt-hurt about Frost going to Stanford out of high school?

A quick Wiki search shows that Taylor is 9 years younger than Frost (32 v 41). It's an interesting discussion of kinda who would you rather bet on. I think it's pretty clear that Taylor is much further along coaching career-wise than Frost was at age 32. I don't follow coaching at all so I'm not sure how unusual it is for a guy to go from the NFL to college. To me, it would seem like once you get into the NFL you'd want to stay there. That being said, if you want to become a HC, it's far easier to do that in the college ranks and he's doing the right thing but going the coordinator route. I think looking at the age progression is a bit misleading. Frost had a reasonably long professional career (8 years?). By his 7th year of coaching, he was a coordinator at Oregon. Zac coached 8 years before getting this opportunity at U of Cinny.

Just as an FYI, a lot of guys go back and forth in the assistant ranks... less so as coordinator and head coaches.

As an aside, I find it interesting that people point to Zac as the kind of QB who could have made Langs/Riley's offense really good. But when I look back at his stat lines under Cally, he was actually less productive than Armstrong this year (noticed it when I read his wiki page) - fewer yards, lesser completion %, less TDs (19 versus 22). He did throw fewer picks (12 versus 16).

What Zac did better was decision making. He seemed like a coach on the field when he was out there and BC needed all the help he could get. Wtout Zac we'd had probably been through 4 losing seasons under BC or the experiment might have ended at year 2 (doubtful) or year 3. The only exception might have been if Ganz had started year 4 instead of Keller - but the D was soooo bad then that even Tommie Frazier may have had a hard time winning wt that group.

If Scott Frost returns to Nebraska, it doesn't magically become 1997 again.

Also, didn't Taylor have an "in" with coaching? He married Mike Sherman's daughter and was on his staff. Perhaps he was on staff first and met his daughter that way though.

Yeah...not sure there. Taylor did start as a GA on A&Ms staff. With Sherman's being much more of a NFL guy with probably more connections there, it's not too surprising as to why Taylor was able to make the leap to the NFL.

If fans have an issue with Zac Taylor because of his association with Callahan, then I have an issue with those fans. Taylor was a hell of a player and leader, who guided us through a transition that would have much more painful without him. He was also a hell of a competitor, who played as hard as he possibly could and left it all on the field. Hard to imagine better credentials to be a part of Husker history than that.

I wouldn't mind either one of them. I would prefer Frost over Taylor, just because I prefer Frost's offensive style over Taylor's. But, I think both of them will be successful in their coaching careers.
