Collins: "no more hesitant play."

Defense per Riley was going to play vanilla and did. Don't think I saw any blitzing.

With that being said, should the defense had been more aggressive? Shouldn't we have seen Collins and Valentine beat more 1:1 's than we did?

What does "no more hesitant play" even mean? isn't this why Banker's teams get beat by spread teams handily?

Not playing next to an elite edge rusher is going to make them face more double teams, I think. I thought they saw quite a few yesterday, but didn't pay particularly close attention.

Overall I thought the dline was pretty underwhelming considering all the hype and talk. But that's pretty much been the story with Collins and Valentine going on 3 years.

If that was vanilla I cant wait to see Rocky Road. I felt like the coverage was fantastic but that was Bo's strong point so we expected that. The pressure and the run stuffing looked great from my seat.

I kinda agree with this. I think I was expecting to see the DLine just look like super badasses but it looked no different than when Bo was coaching.

Yeah Collins and Valentine clogged up the middle nicely, it seemed. Maybe I should watch again. I was mostly paying attention to the QBs yesterday haha.
With the announcement of live QBs, I guess I just expected seeing them on the turf more.

That's the thing, I was watching the QBs too but if you think about it the D collapsed the pocket quite a few times, the QBs were just athletic enough to extend plays.

IMO this is where we will miss RG4. We don't have a guy at DE who can catch a QB once VV/Collins break the pocket.

You must not have seen Freedom running wild Saturday.

Ok, let me rephrase that. We don't have a DE who's ever played a snap of college football who can catch a QB. I do like Freedom, his play/build reminds me of Moss a little.

Need to put a lock on his belt

I expect the d line wanted to rough the QB's feathers up a bit, but not injure them. If they can play like they did Saturday come fall and unleash on opponents, we should see a much improved rush stopping defense as well as a more pressure on the QB defense.

If we want an improvement over the last staffs product it starts there.

"no more hesitant play" fits in with "more aggressive", "more attacking" these terms will be thrown out EVERY time a new D-cordinator comes a long esp. if previous DC was shown the door. The stems from the fact that no DC is going to come in and say "We're going to do exactly what the previous guy did,..you know...the one that got canned?" or "We're going to be more laid back, less attacking, less aggressive."

In most cases it's completely coach speak. There may be more to it in this case because people think Bo's Ds were too complex. Still, even if the D last year was simple but we still sucked, you would hear similar buzz words I'm betting.

Coach speak aside, I am concerned about the Defense.

When Callahn came in we a D to lean on while the O got up to speed, when Pelini came in we had an O to lean on while the D came up to speed, this time around I'm worried about both.
