Comparing Nebraska's most colorful coaches of late

It seems to me if you have a generally negative attitude towards Bo, you're just being negative. If you have a generally negative attitude towards the program at large, and its potential, that's the good kind of negativity?

Its become very clear sd' and Polo arr fed up with the excuses and the optimistic viewpoints. Bo has had 6 seasons to right this ship yet cant hop the speedbump. Whats it going to take they ask? A new coach is what they desire. One that gets recruiting. One that can correct turnovers. One that doesnt blow up on the sidelines. One that fields a strong defense we can rely on. Bo is not the man to do this in their minds. Yet.....

this is pretty spot on for me. except, i really do not care that bo blows up on the sidelines. it is what it is.

I guess thats why people choose to be Bo-Leavers. If the team isnt winning, you win. You can throw out reasons for Bo to be fired and explain to everyone how far weve fallen or the complacency were stuck in. If Bo turns it around and Nebraska starts winning more, you win. A winning team makes a happy fan regardless of how you feel about the coach.

i want the team to win. that is all. this is where there is confusion. this is only about bo's ability to coach. if bo can get the job done, that is awesome. and at the opening kickoff this season, i will be rooting for everyone on the team, including bo.

Is there a particular post or person you're referring to? I think negativity comes in all shapes and forms, and people are down on one player or coach or down on the entire program, and that varies person to person.

It's hard to respond to this because those opinions vary so much.

If Nebraska loses, I don't win. I am upset that my alma mater sucks at football.

Granted Ive only encountered one poster that seems to enjoy a loss. My point is Im guessing it helps to ease the sting by being able to criticize Bo and his choices on and off the field after a loss.

Danny Nee and BP are both Italian and have that fiery personality, that they have in common. Nee treated his players like crap, and almost had a revolt and player walk out in 97 or 98. None of that has occurred under BP. Nee could recruit fairly well, but did very little most the time when he had some pretty good talent. BP has done pretty well with lesser talent, which is BP's fault. I think BP's recruiting is improving though.

Definitely some similarities the difference is that Nee was like that for about 10 of his 14 years at Nebraska while Pelini had IMO one bad stretch of about 3 months. It's just that it is still real fresh in your mind on BP.

Pelini's thing about being fired post Iowa was more along the lines of if it's going to happen, it's going to happen. It was not a "dare". I am another one who a zero concern with Pelini's sideline behavior or the way he treats the media......kind of yesterdays "news"at this point.....

I agree it wasn't a dare at all it meant at this point I can't control whether that happens or not.

His sideline demeanor is aces by me as long as its not getting flagged. Nothing he can do now to take the attention off him anyway. Besides, seeing a ref squirm is alot of fun.

There's just one glaring difference from Bo to Nee.

Nee lost his team and failed to get along with them on several occasions. This has not happened with Bo. Maybe not the most well-prepared. Definitely not the most talented-yet-but they compete. And they never give up. Nee had issues with this all the time. Remember 1996? The NIT champion team? yeah, well, Strickland and company rolled through that tournament for spite. That bunch and Nee just didnt see eye to eye, lost what, 13 straight? Won a senior day game against KState for the hell of it, bombed the Big 8 tourney game as a the last seed, and then rolled throught the NIT. (I say rolled, cuz the championship game was the first decided by single digits if I remember correctly). Yes, there are plenty of legit reasons to move on from Bo, but until he loses the team like Nee had happen on several and random occasions-whether it be for a game or two, a month, or even a season-I have to stay on the Bo wagon and trust my opinion that right now, Nebraska is better off keeping Bo.

If/when Bo leaves and Nebraska manages to find an able football coach with the energizing and embracing mentality of Tim Miles, we'll all wonder how we didn't know what we were missing.

Bo's not just being paid to win championships and deliver a certain win percentage. He has the keys to one of the most prestigious cars in college football. The image of the program and the engagement of the fanbase, hopefully he'll steward more carefully and ably in 2014 than he has in any of his six years to date.

I'll agree that Bo's teams don't give up, but sometimes they just decide to not be there at all for some or all of the games. I won't go into the examples because they're obvious.

This thread is all. Knapp' fault btw. His Nebrasketball origin question got me wondering, so I started grave digging through nee's tenure, and found this. And I just found it really interesting. I would have never once thought of Nee and Bo in the same breath but there were similarities.

I agree with this. But would you agree that he's making pretty substantial efforts to show that cool side of him that the players apparently see all the time? Seems like the presence of Miles, or an ultimatum from the boss maybe, has really pushed him to start embracing Nebraska instead of fighting it. I'd like to see where it goes. We've seen this team under Bo come back under high pressure, back-against-the-wall situations to make a pretty viable assumption that the wheels will not fall off. Whether the corner can be turned, well, that's a whole nother ball game, that is understandable doubtful.

That's true, zoogies. Finding another Tim Miles, but to coach football, is likely unrealistic. Miles seems like a once-in-a-lifetime hire. And the guy who hired him retired.

But Bo needs to realize that he's the public image of this institution, and right now, that image is pretty tarnished. And worst of all, by many recent interviews, he doesn't believe he's doing anything wrong.
