Concerns Regarding the Interior LIne

I'm have concerns about our interior line, especially the OG position. Just the fact that an injured Keith Williams was kept in the Big XII championship game over any of the backups on the roster is something to be very concerned about IMO. Behind Rodriguez, Qvale & Thompson there appears to be no depth. The interior line is the thing that concerns me most about this football team & our chances to win the Big 10 championship

There will be concerns until the Oline proves that they have made improvements over the last couple of years. This same point comes up every spring, and hopefully this year they move forward.

I'm with you. Additionally, Caputo is an excellent technician but he really struggles when asked to move a large nose tackle. He's probably a little undersized.

One reason for hope: Cotton isn't the ONLY coach working with the OL. Maybe the addition of a (hopefully!) good coach or two will bring the cumulative OL coaching average up to . . . well . . . average.

I don't have too many concerns here. Yes our guys are young and will naturally make mistakes due to inexperience. But we're going from 1 offensive line coach to 3 (stai, garrison, cotton). And we're moving from a man offensive line set to a gap set... courtesy of Yoshi hardrick's info in his interview yesterday. Hardrick came out and said straight forward, last year we couldnt be agressive because we had to stay in our spot, watch our man, and think way too much. This year they're playing a gap so they just watch the gap and come much harder off the ball. Qvale and Hardrick have come forward saying this year is going to be much much easier mentally.

Plus even though we are young, we have more depth this year than we have before. And with this new offense where the guys can just play skill without the brains you're going to see a lot more of the talent and a lot less of the confusion and error. They've got 3 guys on them now every day in practice, they're breaking into groups and getting double the practice, Yoshi says it's more fun, harder hitting, easier to pick up. We're gonna see Sirles, Qvale, Coffey, Hardrick, Caputo, Cotton, Jones, Moore, Pensick, Rodriguez, Thompson and Moudy all take the field this year. Not to mention 4 top 100 freshmen coming in and a pretty heck of a group giving us a good look for this next incoming class.

I think a lot of the problems with our offense last year was that we never took the brace off and just ran. We had a lot of talent caught up in the mental aspect of the game. How many times did you hear Watson say this kid is talented but he's got to grasp the mental aspect before he can play... this year it's simple, and the talent is what's gonna see the field, not the brainiacs or the seniors who know the system best.

We know fullbacks are going to be utilized way more, we know there is going to be a lot of no huddle, we know signals are going in as hand signals from the sideline instead of receivers running to get the signal and then coming to the huddle. We know that receivers are running multi-purpose routes, we know kyler reed is going to be lining up as a TE,WR, and RB. We know there are going to be some option plays where guards pull. Defensively we know they've been practicing a lot of 4-3 and are actively going after TONS of LB's in the 2012 class.

We now know Dagan Reed who had an offer from Nebraska but no one else cause of grades is going to be walking on, Braylon Heard is most likely going to make his grades and get to campus, Mike Marrow is coming in as a fullback/linebacker and was regarded as one of the top 10 fullbacks in the nation in 2008. I mean, this team is loading up. The problems with the offense last year weren't problems with talent, they were problems with coaching and that has been taken care of.

Thompson was hurt last year, and another one of the candidates to be a top interior backup, Mike Smith, was also out for the year. Those would have been the top 2 interior backups I think. So having Thompson back is a plus.

i applaud the addition of talent, playing talent....coaching talent is still a whole different matter, until proven otherwise..... <_<

94 this girl was on a roll. She truly does know football.

I am with you on the coaching. The only thing I see that gives me hope is Bo's selection of the original defensive staff. If the O is as good as he did with the D, then we are truly moving forward. I just can not buy into it until after the Wisconsin game. We will know what we have then. But we better be ready to play Fresno State, they will smack us in the mouth and be ready to rumble.

I have to agree the talent level is coming up.

We've heard that there is "increased depth on the OL" every single year for the last . . . I don't know . . . five? It's one of the standard spring articles. I think that the World Herald and Journal Star just change the names and dates and hit print.

I guess there are only so many story lines.

Anyone who tries to tell me we'll be fine at the o-line position...........I'm sorry, but I disagree. The reason I disagree is our o-line has been under performing for several years now and until they get off of their butts and do their jobs, I won't believe any hype concerning the o-line or the offense in general. Show up on the field and produce and then I'll believe it.

Good news is that for the most part we will see a lot 0f 4-3 which means caputo doesnt have to worry about someone lining up over him....he can pretty much chip and climb to the next level

What was it that made the Oline so terrible last year...the sacks, some pass blocking, what? I know Taylor took alot of sacks, but you cannot pin all of those on the oline. As far as our run blocking goes, I thought we had done a great job at that. We were a hundred yards away from having 3 1000 yard rushers last year. To me, that is a pretty good feat in its self.

I'm with Girl on this one...With a new scheme and added coaches, our oline will be better.

I am partly optimistic about this because of the help Barney is getting, because of how finally receptive he appears to be <_< , and because I refuse to believe for a moment that we can be bit by the OL injury bug for a third year in a row. That would just be cruel. Please don't let that happen.

I heard Barney is changing things up. No more hats on hats. This year it’s cummerbunds on cummerbunds.

Count me in too.

The added coaches "and" not having a marginal (at best) QB coach, WR coach & OC sure sounds good to me. I like the odds we "finally" see improvement due to "finally" getting some good coaching at those positions.

The thing that stuck out most to me last year was when we had it 3rd and 2 or 3 to go only to get a false start backing us into 3rd and long. There was one game (can't remember which one) where the OL had three penalties in a friggin row. The OL should have imposed their will on South Dakota State, but in reality SDSU imposed their will on our OL. If we're to believe Beck is this offensive genious and Watson was holding him back, what makes any of us believe that Cotton won't hold back the two additions to the OL staff? Clownahan was supposed to be this OL stud coach, but in reality the OL was typically the poorest unit on that side of the ball. I haven't seen much/any improvement since Bo has been here with Cotton. Milt used to build OL. Today, we just try to recruit them and hope everything turns out okay. In a perfect World, Cotton will listen to Stai. However, I'll have to see this to believe it.
