Cornhuskers Are on the Move Under Pelini
By THAYER EVANS
ARLINGTON, Tex. — Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini’s standards are notoriously tough.
Leading up to Nebraska’s 13-12 loss to Texas in Saturday’s Big 12 championship game, many wanted to talk about his rebuilding of the Cornhuskers, but Pelini didn’t.
“It’s behind schedule as far as I’m concerned because I was hoping to get there last year and it just didn’t happen,” Pelini said of making the Big 12 title game.
But with consecutive nine-win seasons in his first two years at Nebraska, Pelini has the Cornhuskers primed to take another step toward reclaiming its status as one of college football’s elite programs. He inherited a program that went 5-7 before the former coach Bill Callahan was fired at the end of the 2007 season.
Pelini’s turnaround of Nebraska is rooted in defense. The way the Cornhuskers played in Saturday’s loss to Texas was reminiscent of their feared Blackshirts defenses that were a staple under the former coach Tom Osborne. And while Nebraska still has plenty of room for improvement offensively, it’s regaining respect.
“I think we can all say that Nebraska’s back,” Texas Coach Mack Brown said after his team’s victory Saturday night. “They’ve got really good football players.”
