Phonehenge West owner has nine strikes against him — so farBy Ann M. Simmons, Los Angeles Times June 8, 2011

A Superior Court jury has found Alan Kimble Fahey guilty in a partial verdict. He is accused of maintaining illegal properties, some built of phone poles, and could face jail time and be required to tear down his work. Jurors were expected to resume deliberations Wednesday on five more counts.

...

A retired phone service technician, Fahey spent almost three decades constructing the 20,000-square-foot labyrinth of interconnected buildings, stopping only when Los Angeles County code enforcement officials forced him to in 2008. The creation, which includes a 70-foot tower, is a hodgepodge of reddish buildings — some built of telephone poles — connected by bridges and ramps.

When this guy started building the thing 30 years ago he was out in the Mojave Desert, 50 miles north of LA. Since then LA has expanded northward, engulfing him.

I'm not sure which side I agree with. Sure, a wack job like this guy should be allowed to build any kind of monstrosity he wants if he's 50 miles out in the Mojave desert. (He was actually near the small desert town of Acton.) But if the city expanded out and engulfed him, well, it's not so clear cut.
