Coz on the Sideline

I was sitting in section 6 row 20, right on the 50 yard line behind the benches today, and I have a big concern. I think it was in the 3rd quarter Ball St. burned us for a huge TD pass, the crowd even booed the defense off the field. I was watching the sidelines the whole time and you know what? Cosgrove did not appear to even care. He didn't even look at any of the defensive players, didn't go over and chew anyone out, or go and give them encouragement, he completely ignored them. And I don't think that was a motivational tactic, I saw him maybe once talk to players on the sideline other than just sending in plays.

Wouldn't you expect the Defensive Coordinator to have some interaction with his players during the game, especially after they just got torched? I don't care what it is, go give them some encouragement, rip them a new one, remind them to concentrate on fundamentals... something?

This is just one of the many things I don't like about him. He needs to go and soon. The defense gives up 610yards to Ball State at HOME! If he is still here after this season, I'm going to be livid! This guy should not be anywhere near a football team with the talent that Nebraska does!

I think that's the problem. It's not that Ruud, McKeon, etc, are not talented. It's not that we are having poor recruits and not developing them. We need more fire. Coz is not inspiring these guys. Elmassian is not inspiring these guys. Remember Pelini? That whole year was just pure fire. Not that it was all great, and of course Pelini can't come back and I don't want him back. But I think these are things to consider in the search for a new D-coord or other staff members.

Yes he should either be in the booth or if he wants to be on the sidelines he needs to be fired up otherwise there is no reason to be on the sideline.

 
touching on what zoogies said, i agree, you have a "relaxed" or "laid-back" attitude as a defensive coordinator. You gotta be an in-your-face, fire them up kinda guy...

Well I've noticed that Callahan is pretty much the same way.. doesn't ever appear to be fired up on the sidelines. But, our offense seems to be fine. Maybe it's not as important for Offensive coaches to be fired up during games as it is for Defensive Coaches?

I guess that would make sense, you want your offense to be comfortable and relaxed.. and you want your defense to be wound tight as a piano wire ready to take people's heads off. On offense if you're too wound up you're more vulnerable to making mistakes (dropping passes, bad passes, etc..).

 
Not excusing Cos, but where is the leadership on D to fire everyone up. Do D1 players need to get fired up.

 
I do think playing on an emotional high is much better for the defense. It can work for the offense too, but to me it's almost a necessity for the defense, and it definitely starts with either the defensive staff or the captains. And it's not coming from either right now.

 
I am not sure that either is important. It all depends on the coach, IMO.

You guys also have to realize that these are the head guys on defense and offense. Guys like Randy Jordan, Elmo, Ted Gilmore, Bill Busch, etc are on the sidelines and do get quite excited. I know Busch does. He cracks me up sometimes.

They do, but real motivation comes from captains IMO. People like to imagine movie-scene like inspirational speeches and if that's a coaches style, then fine.

i disagree here, Callahan does show some fire from time to time. but unfortunately when he does, it gets used against him by the Spooners and Fluffaloes. Remember the time that he called the f'ing hillbillies, f'ing hillbillies? how about the time that he told the Refs the he had had it up to here, and was accused of a throat slashing move

 
Coaches need to be in players faces during the good and the bad. TRUST me all of these players react to emotion. College football is driven by emotion, otherwise there wouldn't be let down games right???? I think the position coaches should be the ones getting fired up and Coz should be in the booth because he isn't a firey guy and does no benefit on the sideline. His pasiiveness may even have a negative effect.

Yeah I know that.. but does he ever show emotion directed at players? Not refs/opposing fans?
