Crick, Blackshirts savor road testsBy Mitch Sherman

LINCOLN — Jared Crick makes no attempt to disguise his feelings about playing football on the road.
“The more hostile,” he said, “the better.”
Crick, Nebraska's junior defensive tackle, said he believes that road games bring out the best in the Blackshirts. The whole team, in fact, plays well away from Memorial Stadium — a trend under third-year coach Bo Pelini that may serve NU well Thursday night as it travels to Manhattan, Kan., to open Big 12 play against Kansas State.
Pelini is 6-2 at Nebraska in Big 12 road games, winning five straight since a 62-28 loss at Oklahoma in 2008. The Huskers finished 4-0 on the road in league play last year, their first unbeaten road mark in conference games since 1997.
Pelini's predecessor, Bill Callahan, went 5-11 from 2004 to 2007 at opponents' stadiums in the Big 12.
According to NU players, it's a unity thing.
“It's us versus the world,” safety P.J. Smith said. “We've got to go out there and do our thing. Playing away, it helps with the focus a lot more. We become more close when we're on the road. We're a close bunch as it is, but on the road we have that small something that helps out a lot more.”
At home, the Huskers deal with distractions. There are friends and family members to meet, recruits on campus and postgame plans.
On the road, it's just the team.
“We communicate better,” Crick said. “We play better. We play together. The crowd — they can say whatever they want, it's just going to motivate us a little more.
“It's completely business. It's not really going on vacation. But it's what we love to do.”
