CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Following the first spring football practice of the new year, UNC head coach Butch Davis spoke to reporters.
Davis discussed the practice itself, some of the position changes that are taking place, and the personnel that they will have at their disposal. He also talked about Joe Dailey, and his move from quarterback to wide receiver.
Opening statement:
Obviously, I think I was very pleased. I think all our coaches felt very confident that the eight weeks we had with the players prior to the start of the spring break; we covered a lot of ground. The players did a great job running and lifting.
We felt like they made a lot of strides from a conditioning standpoint. We also made a lot of strides in trying to learn some of the basic elements of the offense, and the defense, and special teams. From that standpoint, I thought for our very first practice with a brand new team, it was about as efficient as possible.
We had a two-hour and 15-minute practice actually scheduled, but we completed it in an hour and 58 minutes. So that speaks, I think, to the efficiency of it, and it kind of spoke to the tempo.

Whose idea was it to move Joe Dailey to wide receiver?
Probably mine; Joe and I talked back in December. Joe had come in and sat down and he said, 'You know, I can graduate.' He's an awesome kid. He's a brilliant young man, he's a good athlete. I said, 'Look, I've got an idea,' and I said, 'What I want you to do is I want you to take the Christmas holidays and think about it. When you come back after Christmas, you can come out here and you can attempt this. And if you think it's something that you would like to do.'
And he said, 'Coach, look. Here's what I really want to do. I want to help North Carolina win football games.' And he said, 'If you think it's a role that will help,' and I said, 'Look; the NFL is full of guys that are Joe Daileys. Drew Pearson, that played for the Dallas Cowboys was one; but, obviously, the most notable; Antwan Randle-El; Hines Ward.
There are a litany of guys that are playing that were former high school and college quarterbacks that are having spectacular NFL careers. And he's too good of a guy, and too valuable of an offensive weapon, for us to not find and create a role for him; so far, so good.
