Dan Wetzel's Yahoo column....

I don't disagree with you at all, but unfortunately I know how "Husker" faithful tend to think and sway. The absolute worst thing that could happen to Bo and staff is a 7 win season next year. We gave Solich 6 years. We gave Clownahan 4 years. We give Bo?

I think it's rather a non issue. There's only a minute chance that we go 7-5 next year. I mean, BO was kind of pissed we didn't go 10-2 this year.

It's ALOT more fun right now to be enjoying the ride than running half scared--as a fan. What if things turn out better than we expect? That's more possible, IMO.

I guess I just see things differently than you guys.

I do not see us returning to the dominant force we once were. I see us returning to a good team playing at a good level. I do not see Pelini turning 3 star players into NC teams. There is just too much talent on the other top teams, that we are never going to get.

Kids today want everything handed to them. They expect to play early, leave early with a NC ring to show for their brief stop to the pros. Whether that is right or not makes little difference. That is what they want and expect.

We are not a place most kids want to go. We are normally the third of fourth pick of the top kids, and the other three are normally a lot nicer place to play. Weather wise.

I guess I am saying if we continue to set the standards that we had in the 90's we are going to fail and we will be switching coaches like Alabama did. We had a gimmick in the 90's. We do not have that any more. I don't think we can recruit the kids that Texas, SC, Florida, Alabama or a few other do. That means we get the left overs, but with good coaching we can see the NC game on occasion, but the days of our dominance are over. I can live with it as long as what we put on the field plays like a Nebraska team. We saw that all but two games this year. And I am honestly happy with the effort and the improvement.

I never expect NC teams. Hope for, but never demand or figure it is going to happen. Way too much luck involved.

If we can maintian 9 win seasons, I will be a very happy camper. Sprinkle a CC in every few years and a shot at the NC once every 5-7 I will be more than satisfied.

Unfortunately I am not the ususal Nebraska fan. Our fan base is getting worse in its demands and expectations. We have a team that really did not accomplish much this year. We won exactly what we should have, got trounced twice and now some are calling for NC within the next two to three years. I do not see that bridge.

gimmicks...miami dolphins circa '08. tim tebow pitching options...... like the old quote says, ill take luck, 'specially if when it ends in NC's.

i really don't think the record was as a big of a deal with Cally as HOW the team was playing. That team had the talent to win more than 5 games...they gave up, the coaching staff couldn't rally them. I really don't see that as a problem for Bo.

I'm going to throw a name out there, and you tell me if I'm warm in regards to how you see this program going. Virginia Tech. They year in and year out play pretty solid. They've played for a NC I believe once in the past decade. They typically don't get the superstards, but they are well coached and play very good fundamental football. Am I warm as to where you see NU headed?

I guess that would be a good comparisson.

I have been around a long time, we had a few really good years, pretty much better than anyone in modern football, but those are all anyone here seems to remember.

Find the right coach and just keep plugging away. Play the best you can, run the program clean, keep up the accademic standards and All Americans and I will be happy.

I do not think of NC's as being the measuring mark. They would be great and I would certainly love to see them.

You honestly have to look at it like a kid does. If he has the talent to go anywhere he wants, what brings him to Nebraska? A slight few look at the history, and tradition. Some have loyalty through family members and friends with in the region.

But a kid that knows he can go to SC, Florida, Texas, will most likely go there. We are going to see things change I think. The northern teams that used to dominate college football are not doing it any longer. Look at the record for the northern teams in the last 10 years. How many NC have there been? I think Ohio State is the only one and that was a fluke.

Kids want the warm weahter year round, they want the fancy clubs to go play in. They want the ocean and the mountains if they can have them.

We have to get the local kids, the kids that want to stay at home. Look at football as weigh point, not an end all, take them and make what TO did. Live breath Nebraska. Bo may have that talent, I think he at least comes close.

But expecting to be the Nebraska of the 90's is not realistic I am afraid. If you are expecting thtat a lot of fans are going to be very disappointed in a few years.

I hope I am wrong on that. But common sense tells me I am not.
