Looks like he goes on to say Zaire and Santos are working the Will spot, and Compton the other LB spot. Doesn't look good for Whaley, but I don't think Compton is going to lose his job. Nor do I think he should. But that's just me. I think he's been our best player in the front 7 so far.

i agree, but whaley is a total liability out there. good jamaal lord.

Basically a product of recruiting classes that range in the mid 20 to 30 or worse range. Pretty hard to chase down a Camaro with a Rambler even if the Rambler's parked in the right spot!

 
We are slow at LB.. which is why guys like Banderas (110 meter hurdler), Afalava, Rose, and Newby are critical players and recruits for the future.

Anderson, a junior college star who talked to reporters for the first time Monday night, said he’s been working one-on-one with head coach Bo Pelini to get up to speed on NU’s complex, check-heavy defense.

I agree. Really seems you have to have a great deal of experience/football sense (David) or be in the system several years (2+) before you really "get" the system. As I understand it, the system is VERY dependent on every person knowing their position in the particular defensive call. If one guy misses a call or read, the whole D suffers. Maybe it is time to simplify the schemes.

The Hail Varsity article said that UCLA adjusted to the zone read by having the DE just "crash" on the QB. It worked. Two sacks (one was a safety) that effectively turned the tide. They adjusted, and Beck went into Tom Brady panic mode, going all drop back pocket passer with a decisive, quick kitchen sink bum rush defense coming at our no depth O line that had to be worn out by then. Guy needs to learn how to defeat the rush with screens, draws and some dump passes our we are doomed. Guarantee no team is scared of Martinez arm, even after SMU. 8 in the box and rush him like crazy. Year 2 (actually on 3) and we still have no real plan to defeat a team committed to stopping Martinez from running.

The lack of screens surprises me. Beck learned under Mangino, and Kansas ran those as bread and butter.

 
Even seniority appears not to matter with this team. Ankrah, Meredith, Steinkuhler - all second year starters or more, all underwhelming.
