Defensive Scheme

Well, there was something I saw last night that made me think that we may have had a problem with the fundamental defensive scheme. After watching that debacle, I'm thinking that a 3-4 looks better all the time. Apparently we can't muster 4 good defensive linemen (or offensive linemen, either, but that's another topic).

Our stunts and free d-linemen overpenetrated time after time.

It seemed that half of our defense ended most plays by standing around in the offensive backfield looking baffled.

For a quick team that specializes in misdirection like SC, I would think that you would be wary of overpenetration. Am I wrong?

Was the defense just too pumped, and reacting with adrenaline instead of intelligence?

The running backs of SC had it made. They ran through a hole, and there was no one left to worry over until they got into the defensive secondary.

I thought the defensive secondary looked pretty decent, by the way. Hat's off to number 1. He showed some moxy last night. Grixby may not have the physical attributes, but he plays every play hard and tough. Too bad our LB's aren't made of the same stuff.

BTW, is there some secret reason that Ruud continues to play? He's never been up to the task. Is it because of family tradition or something? Is there a relative that is a big contributor to the program? He just has to go.

First off my hats go off to the secondary as well they played a good game and they are definately better and Grixby is our best tackler on the defensive side of the ball by far!!!! Our LB's besides Steve-O absolutely f'ing suck!!!! Our defensive line was horrible as well (minus Potter)................why do you ask??? Because of the holes that USC created right up the gut that were so big Mangino could roll his fat a$$ right through them!!! There was countless times where we had the guy in the backfield and forgot to take this things we call arms and wrap them around a guy and drive him to the f'ing ground!!!! I've never seen worse tackling in all of my life!!!! I don't know what these guys do in practice, but we need a little asian guy to stand out there on the field and everytime one of these guys misses a tackle like they did last night, or try this arm tackling sh#t, he needs to take a bamboo stick and smack them numerous times!!!!! It's really sad I am NOT going to call them blackshirts because they do not deserve that title. Right now it's just going to be "go defense"

See my USC recap article below for my suggested title. I like the ring of Pinkshirts. Calling them a defense is a bit too forgiving, in my opinion. Blackshirt is a title given to a D that dominates. Defense is a term given to a team that plays well but still gives a bit up during most games. Pinkshirts is what you saw last night, a team which gives up a 50 yard and 40 yard run consecutively.

yep, the lbs were terrible, because they had to make virtually every tackle, their asses were worn out, because the front 4 couldn't hold up.

this is exactly what i was afraid of this year, a front 4 who could not stop the run and would get pushed around. they don't have the experience as a unit and not as much talent/ability as we would like.

let's face it O and D line play makes the game. without a decent front, everyone behind them struggles, on both sides of the ball!
