Dennis Dodd's post spring ball top 25

I was worried that we weren't gonna get another one of these polls released today! Let's have a completely separate and unique discussion about this poll compared to the 35 others. And go.

Doesn't Bama have FSU's number 2 QB coming in during the summer. The kid pushed Winston all the way through fall practice last year I think. Said it was their closest QB race in history. I can see him coming in and doing a great job, he obviously has talent. Kiffen will keep him in a win situation until his feet are wet. I am not saying number 1 but they are right there in the top 4 at the end of the year is my guess.
That's what the coaches said, and it was full of sunshine pumping BS. Most of the FSU fans I know said Winston had it locked down from the get go, and Fisher was only using it as motivation.

talk about anecdotal evidence.

Even the local media was relaying this.

what do you think anecdotal evidence means? it is hearsay. it means that it is evidence based on personal experience rather than facts and figures. so basing an assertion on "fans i know have said" is, by definition, anecdotal evidence.

I know exactly what it means. You keep using it as a dismissive tactic as if it refutes his statement. It doesn't.

i was refuting your statement that was based on the fsu fans you know. that is the definition of anecdotal evidence.

and i am not using it to dismiss a statement, per se, but to qualify the evidence presented. if your evidence is that this qb is not as good as winston because fans you know have said so, that is anecdotal evidence. and that is all i was referring to.

So, then his post about fsu fans was anecdotal, and his statement about the coaches was anecdotal and blah blah blah....

This is dumb.

this is dumb. all i did was point out that the underlined statement below is anecdotal evidence:

That's what the coaches said, and it was full of sunshine pumping BS. Most of the FSU fans I know said Winston had it locked down from the get go, and Fisher was only using it as motivation.
and then you decided to have an argument about semantics.
Yeah..... no.
ok.

Glad we cleared that up.

You are completely misunderstanding the concept.
Personal recollections, rumors, and hearsay are great means to get the story behind the scenes. They are not, however, acceptable when trying to gauge a trend in a population.

It's why when posters here claim, OMG ALL THE OTHER SCHOOLS' FANS CAN'T BELIEVE WE DIDN'T FIRE BO!!!! and then back this up with "I've talked with a few people" we call foul. The results could be from push-polling, or you creating the response (imagine that you complained to a Sooner fan about Bo for an hour and then asked what they thought of him, you could be skewing results). It could be you talked to one or two people and when you got confirmation of your opinion decided to apply this to the population as a whole.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Saunders' post. He didn't claim that most fans believed this to be true, or that this indicated a trend. Simply that it might give us a behind the scenes look at a decision making process.
