Blame greed. Online/mmo/multiplayer can be good, but not every game needs them. But some publishers want some aspect of that included in every game to try to create a revenue stream with DLC packs, Subs, or Microtransactions.
They just need to focus on it being a good game. Skyrim has no multiplayer at all. And CivV is primarily a single player. And both are consistently in the Steam top 10 played, and purchased. And are both over a year old.
