Does Callihan still have an NFL mentality?

HuskerfaninOkieland

Heisman Trophy Winner
This question was asked on another Huskers forum with some interesting answers. Some think he's still stuck in the NFL others think he can't score the big points. Yet others think he's too conservative regardless.

What are your thought? Me personally? I think he is, but whether you win by 1 point or 100 points, a W is a W is a W.

Disclaimer: I'm not Cali-hating. I think he's doing a great job. I'd rather have an NFL minded coach who can win than an NCAA minded coach who can't.

I just think he wants the ball control no matter what. With the way are D-backs are playing, I just don't think we want to get into a shootout with another team. As you said Okie, a W is a W no matter how many points you put up.

BTW, if/when we win the Big XII championship, is it an automatic BCS bid?? If so, who cares if we move up the polls to get there? Maybe I am confused about the automatic BCS bids from conferences......

I think he is still int he NFL mind site, keep the ball out of the hands of your opponents. In the NFL, there are no polls and no reason to run the score up, a win is a win. IN the NCAA where we have, what, 4 polls (AP, Coaches, HI, BCS), without a convencing win, you just aren't going anywhere, bull sh#t, yes, but the way it is.

I see Coach Cally as a guy who wins and doesn't see the need to blow other teams out of the water, unless you are team like Troy or something. (Just trying to keep teams like Troy in the mindset there in the BIG league now!)

Hey, like it was said, a Win is a Win, is a Win and lets take 'em as they are, WINS!

GO BIG f'ing RED!

I have said before and I still believe that we need to go for the jugular and make it impossible for a team to come back before we go into cruise control. I am not a fan of embarrasing the other team, but there is a difference between running up the score and making damn sure the opposing team cannot make a come back.

3 games in a row we have jumped out early and it seems we were satisfied to try and burn clock and try and control the ball. It damn near cost us a W at home against kansas. Now there will be times that you get ahead and the other team makes the right adjustmens and you dont and you are in a dog fight. But we should have in my opinion put a couple of more scores or tried to knock these teams out.

All said, I am satisfied where we are at right now, but my expectations go up each week. We should show improvement and continue to try and reach our goals.

GBR

:yeah

Although I though against KU we didn't try to control the clock and that is why they got back in the game. We came out and threw it all over the field and never ran any time off the clock allowing KU to get back in the game.

6-1 is alright by me.

I really don't care how much NU wins by. True, the pollsters like to knock a team for not having a flashy win, but anyone who knows football knows that NU dominated KSU last night and completely controlled the game vs. ISU the week before. As far as I'm concerned a three touchdown lead is a big enough lead to pull back the reins.

As for the convincing or "signature" win - Callahan knows that NU will have to get past Texas, probably twice to win the conference, so trying to blow out a lesser team like KSU really doesn't make sense. Blowing out KSU or ISU in no way affects Nebraska's goals for the season, so why try to keep the pedal to the floor when you've got the victory in hand?

yes, it doesn't matter where you are in the polls, if you win your conference then you are automatically in the BCS

Does Callihan still have an NFL mentality?

Yes, winning

The BCS computer doesn't care after the difference in the score is over 21 points

I would think so. a coach isn't going to change his philosophy in this short amount of time. esp a young coach. remember how long it took TO to change from a big defense to a fast defense? give the guy some time. the fact that he slowly maturing is NOT ALL BAD

what do you think the chances are that we would have a young coach with NFL experience would come in and win, and then STAY?? I love nebraska, but its not as special to a non nebraskan, unless you get time to get used to it.

The way our defense played last night, I would of felt that 14 was good enough for a win. Sure they gave up a few short drives but they shut down KSU when they needed to. As far as Callahan being an NFL minded coach, sure I think he is. However, Jim Tressel won a championship with that same mentality. It doesn't matter how you win, just as long as you win. 6-1 baby. Go Big Red.

I want wins. The polls are beauty contests. If the Huskers turn out to be winners year after year, beauty contests results will follow.

Example, how on earth did Mizzou get highly rated? It's not because they were a great team. It's because they were a surprise. The reason NU gets ignored is because of history. People expect NU to be a one or two loss team or better. Until we get there we will get no respect. I feel it commin' on though. If not this year, next year, but I think we're getting there. I like what I'm seeing. GBR.
