Don't Answer Your Cell Phone While Tim Miles is Talking

This happened on Tuesday night, at the Christ the King sports banquet in Omaha. The usual big crowd was on hand, with steak, cocktails and stories on the menu. Miles, the Nebraska men’s basketball coach, was rolling.

Then the phone rang and the dutiful husband answered. Miles picked up on it immediately. He looked at the culprit and said, “Did you just answer your phone?”

He immediately walked off the stage and through the crowd of tables to the guy talking to his wife.

“Here, let me have that,” Miles said, grabbing the phone. “Hi. You’re interrupting my speech.”

The crowd roared.

“Are you a Husker fan?” Miles asked the woman. “Oh, you’re trying? I hear you. We’ll get there, I promise.”

Oh, what a night. For nearly 90 minutes, longer than most speakers in the event’s history, Miles went. He laughed. He joked. He poked fun at himself. He was relentless with the jabs to the countless Creighton fans in the audience.

During the event’s oral auction, auctioneer Joe Grant had some fun and presented Miles with a navy Creighton sweater vest. Miles, in turn, auctioned it off and threw it to the crowd.
