Don't forget T-Mo

I was asking Jared Crick last week about his defensive line mates around him. Who's caught his eye this winter conditioning?Fellow defensive tackle Terrence Moore was the first name out of his mouth.

Now juniors, Crick said he and Moore have taken to being more vocal. "Now you see Terrence coming up with a major leadership role. He's taken it upon himself to help the younger guys," Crick said.

Moore, who Crick and company refer to as "T-Mo," was slowed by a toe and ankle injury in 2009. It severely limited his role. He played in just four games and had two tackles for the season.

Crick says Moore's bad wheel in 2009 "was the only thing keeping him from a breakout season."

There figures to be a good battle for playing time on the interior of Nebraska's defensive line. Moore and sophomore Baker Steinkuhler are the leading candidates to play next to Crick, though Crick said he isn't taking the approach that even his job is secure.

Steinkuhler, such a name in Nebraska lore, gets mentioned the most by fans and media. He had 17 tackles, one tackle-for-loss and two pass breakups last season.

"Baker has all that potential -- the long arms, the strength, the speed," Crick said. "You see the potential and you think wow. It's great to see both those guys work so hard during the offseason and become what they've become"

Also in the conversation are Thaddeus Randle and Justin Jackson. Crick said Randle has a great first step and is now working on his strength. He said Jackson, a product of Norris High School, has been surprising him. "He's a strong kid. He's getting quicker. He's got great hands," Crick said. "That's three things that you really need to play inside."

"The D-line we have now is the D-line is I want. I wouldn't rather have anybody else," Crick added. "Sure, you'd like Suh and Barry and those guys back but it's just the way it is and you have to roll with the punches. I'm excited about this group coming up."

I hope he develops into something special. He and Baker will provide valuable depth the the interior d-line this season! :koolaid2:

I've been talking about Terrance Moore since this time last year. He's gotten good praise from the coaches, he's just been banged up. Between Moore, Thad Randle and Baker Steinkuhler, I have no worries about our interior line.

Agreed. Don't count out Jay Guy either. He may figure into the mix if an injury occurs or something unexpected happens.

Our ends don't look too shabby either with Meredith, Allen, Ankrah, and the possibility of another solid backup such as Williams or Vestal. Our d-line should be pretty solid once the coaches figure out what pieces should go where - which knowing the defensive coaches, will probably be figured out by the third game at the latest.

Don't forget Chase Rome. He'll be in mix somewhere too.

No matter what happens, DT might be our deepest position. Especially when it is anchored by Crick.

I can't wait until opposing QB's get Crick Rolled again.

If Terrence Moore has a season next year like Crick had this year...the 2009 defensive line is going to look like child's play :ahhhhhhhh

I'm stoked about the leadership qualities these guys are bringing to the table. Great defenses always have great leadership, on the sidelines & in the huddle.
