Kansas State and the state of Kansas suffered a blow this past weekend when former Wildcats quarterback Dylan Meier died from injuries suffered during a family hiking trip in Arkansas. The Kansas City Star reported the death Monday night.
Meier was 26.
Meier, a member of one of the most athletically celebrated families in Kansas, played quarterback for the Wildcats from 2002 to 2006. He appeared in 35 games, completing 55 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,287 yards and 12 touchdowns during his career mostly under Bill Snyder.
"For all of us here, it really is a major setback and somewhat difficult to get our arms around right now," Snyder said during a conference call Tuesday. "He was an unbelievable young man in all the right ways. He was probably as good a leader as one could wish for in a program.
"He possessed all the intrinsic values that makes people successful. The good thing is he guided others in that direction, as well. I think the spirit and the passion he had for life and for adventure and for other people is the thing that will live on in our minds and our hearts."
Meier's older brother, Shad Meier, played tight end for Kansas State from 1997-2000 before going on to a six-year career in the NFL. Meier's younger brother, Kerry Meier, played quarterback and then wide receiver at Kansas before exhausting his eligibility after the 2009 season. Kerry is awaiting this week's NFL draft.
Dylan went on to enjoy a pro career in Europe and had primarily lived overseas since graduating from Kansas State.
