Early synopsis for next year.

Great read. Biggest concerns for me are ball security, special teams, play calling and QB decision making.
I'd say the only problems we have with special teams are punt returns and the fact that Foltz can be up and down as a punter. Foltz needs to be more consistent, and punt return needs a complete overhaul. But overall the kicking game and coverage teams were pretty good last year.

Special teams and turnovers will define the season. All the other stuff is nice, but until we can do more than fair catch a punt, and not turn it over 2-3 times a game, we'll still be the same team.

There will be football
Pretty much sums it up. Too many references of 'he or they will be the greatest since...". Jeebus. Give me a break. The things that stuck out to me were losing 5 starting seniors on the offensive line along with our two best cornerbacks. My preview; Just another Pelini coached team next year. At least they have a somewhat easy schedule again which should help them. I'm just looking to see what Johnny Stanton can do. Randy Gregory and AA are fun to watch. Otherwise next year will just be a replay of last year and the year before and...rinse, repeat.

might depend on the incoming jucos.....they could be difference makers.

Don't forget penalty and penalty yard differential. Between the bad field position differential, either brought upon by poor returns or turnovers, and penalty yards, we've been digging ourselves a hole for years.

Yep. Especially if you add in the penalties, like Creighton Duke mentioned.

Fix it. If they're not able to fix it we need change. It'd be a real shame to see another team with good potential fall to the same old issues.

For the most part, penalties are overrated. in 2013, NU's penalties per game was the lowest it's been in almost 10 years. If you look at the national rankings, the top 25 teams are all over the map.

Things like false starts on a 3rd & 2, or a PI on 3rd down can certainly have an effect on the outcome, but this past year it wasn't very common, especially when compared to years past.

I think Deadspin or a Deadspin site took a look at penalties and success in the NFL. They found that penalty yardage was overrated; Seattle, the best defensive team in the league committed nearly the most or the most penalties.

Agree.

2013 76 for 665 yards

2012 88 for 847

2011 86 for 688

2010 109 for 993

2009 100 for 894

2008 94 for 800

Definitely a good trend. In 2013, we only had 12 more yards of penalties than our competition per game. Not huge. We have bigger areas that need improvement than penalties. Keep the trend heading in the right direction and we will be fine here.
