Earning the Big Red N

How about this for a new tradition, in the style of the blackshirt.

Every player that arrives new at camp, whether a freshman or transfer, gets a plain white helmet for practice. No big red N on the side.

When a select group of senior players decide it has been earned on the practice field, they present the newbie with their N.

Simple, but evident.

All the old school players talk about the N on the helmet meaning something. I don't think it does anymore. No buckeye stickers or tomahawk stickers or such. You either have a red N on your helmet in practice or you don't.

I'm all for any good, thoughtful ideas for how the team can create some pride, confidence and unity within the lockerroom, so if this would help I'd be all for it. But for the love of god, can we not make it a big public spectacle like the "earned" Blackshirts became under Pelini. That was a catastrophe I'd just as soon we avoid. Let it be something the players do to hold each other accountable, not some "show trial" for fans' benefit.

Ohio State does this with a stripe on their helmet for freshman and they have to earn a spot on the team to get it removed...so we could emulate urban....or jump off a bridge
