Good article from SI breaking down our offensive and defensive stats for the year. Also shows where we rank with the highest and lowest in stats to compare us to other programs. A few surprises TBH. Best RB in the B1G, AA RB, but only 81st in rushing O. D was average, but red zone D pathetic at 133rd.....

Needed some changes on both sides and the stats show it. Also show, IMHO, some other guys might need to be gone as well....And some guys did a good job.

Poor rushing overall because Holgorsen had to be dragged kicking and screaming to actually run the ball. And when he finally did we didn't do anything else.

Getting rid of that awful Satterfield, having Raiola with another year of experience, actually playing a competent running back, bringing in two starting wide receivers and two portal linemen improved our attack by a whopping 13 yards per game.

Agree. Dude is not a run the damn ball coach. 13 yards per game more. That makes it even worse. I wonder what it would look like without Akron and HCU. Take an average of the other 10 games and give those rushing yards to Akron and HCU. I'm guessing it's less than 13 yards at that point. And IIC, EJ was 83 or 87% off the running game. And yes, you run the stats for the games you have as every team adds some cannon fodder to the schedule....

Yeah, most of EJ's numbers were just due to his sheer number of carries - #4 in the country. He was #65 in the country in ypc (although that number did improve late in the season - it was like #90 before). He's durable, and he's got pretty good consistency in being able to get decent positive yardage. But he rarely hit 10+ yarders, let alone home runs.

We are 22 years removed from firing Frank and Jamal Lord right and Jamal Lord left and our offense became basically the same— EJ right and EJ left. Where is the high flying offense that the offense guru was supposed to have?

Concerning to say the least. And with next years schedule and no "Mister 94.1%" looks rough. Throw in @Mavric stat about O is only 13 yards per game better as well.....

Second paragraph is pretty much where I'm at. For all the talk about Year Three Rhule it just looked like we were treading water. If you're building a core of younger players who will actually blossom in Year Four, the plug & play portal and the schedule suggests this may be the ceiling. I'm not putting that much on Holgorson or offensive stats since the defense didn't grow either, and in fairness to Holgorsen, Raiola and Johnson this was much closer to the offense Husker fans wanted to see, and both play calling and execution pulled out a couple late game wins that the Huskers have lost in recent years.

Not sure about the first statement. Is there any record of Holgorsen preferring to go pass-heavy, but Rhule forcing him to play Johnson more? Once Johnson became our featured back, we certainly didn't abandon the pass. The difference is that in the past our 1,400 yard rusher would be three or four guys getting less than 500 yards a season. The same Emmett Johnson from the previous two seasons had a break out year, which among most fanbases would earn a smattering of credit to an improved offensive line and supportive OC.

There's a small handful of true Air Raid offensive guys out there. Most every OC loves a productive running game, even if it's to set up the pass.

We have a guy running across the formation at snap all the time, but did we ever actually give him the ball for a jet sweep?

I recall Jacory running jet swoop a handful of times. Limited production however, once or twice he might have got the edge for a first down, nothing huge

I feel like the jet sweep had its moment in both college and the NFL a few years ago, but seems to have fallen out of favor.

They've always done the pre-snap sweep trying to drag a linebacker or two, but the running version doesn't seem to work very often.

Actually, it probably didn't work as well as everyone thought on most teams. They just kept watching a certain Wisconsin RB run for 782 yards in one conference championship game and thought it was the greatest play ever invented.
